when do you night fishemen usualy start looking for the night bite? I was thinking of giving it a shot as soon as the ice thickens up but will the fish even be in a night feeding mode yet or does that come more with fishing pressure and thicker ice? I’m kind of new at this whole night bite thing if you couln’t tell but I would love to give it a go.

Whenever the ice is safe to fish on! The early ice walleye bite here on the madison chain is dependent on green weeds in 3-4 feet of water. crappies bite at night all year long.

First ice walleye on clear lakes is a top notch option, the picture of the walleye on my handle is a early December Red Cedar walleye. Get some tip up lights, a dozen shiners and a few buddy’s and hit it all night long. Scout out during the day to find the green weed edges, rock bars etc. and set up before sun down. Stay away from your set up and approach your flags with stealth.

We do really well night fishing for both crappie and walleye all season long, usually we see a good flurry of activity right at sunset to first dark, then might hit a bit of a lull for about 30-45 min, then it will be pretty consistant the rest of the night. Fishing the same spots you would during the daytime, weed edges, rock bars, etc. Catching fish on both tip-ups and jigging, watch your Marcum, sometimes the fish at this time won’t be hugging the bottom, they will be a foot or two off of the bottom, so watch your marcum and adjust accordingly.

I also consider how much snow on top of the ice. If it’s been heavy snowcover mostly, then I’ll generally stick to a daybite. If there’s been little to no snowcover, I’m all over the nightbite routine. I just like the sound of ice forming. Sometimes scary when you get a crack right between your legs and some water or mist pressure shoots up. I love to scare new guys.
