Sparta/La Crosse area Ice Conditions

Did a short drive about today and found a couple favorite first ice Gill/Pike spots firming up but, not ready to see foot traffic. A sharp hit with the spud was the thickness I would say 1.5inches of clear ice….couple more days if the nights stay cold. Last nights single digit was a big help

Word has it from a good source that Goose Island seen some foot traffic today. Can anyone confirm this? My bet would be out from the culverts in 3-4fow coming in from the backside…if I was a betting man

And if Goose has seen traffic I would bet the ice at the end of Fishermans road is getting real tight too…….

That’s very encouraging news! I was planning on taking a jaunt down to Lauderdale today after the Badger game just to check on things.

Just watch yourself at Lauderdale this early. My guess is it is not quite ready yet. That is deep and a bugger to get back out of if you fall through

I was at Goose on Friday- The culverts still had some open water straight out. I’m sure it locked up last night but probably still a little thin. When I checked on Friday I was able to stand on the ice behind the equipment shed in that very protected bay just a few yards out from shore. That is usually my go-to spot for first ice. I wouldn’t doubt that that is where they were seeing foot traffic today. I walked out on 4 backwaters today on pools 5a and 6 after I got done with work. They all had 3+” of clear hard ice. I’ll have a report up tomorrow and hopefully a limit of panfish I’m pumped!

A guy at work said he spoke with a guy at the end of fishermans road. Sounded like 2 inches of ice on saturday and he had 10+ 8 inch gills. It won’t be long!

Checked out Lauderdale on Sat and met a guy there from out of town who was planning on venturing out with about 2 inches of ice. I came back later that day and saw 1 hole popped in the middle….wonder how he did.

It wasn’t a big hole was it?
