So I’m thinking of pulling the trigger on my first Thorne ice rod and wondering if I should go with a 32″ outside perch rod instead of the 28″ inside rod. Most of my fishing is done inside a shack permanent or portable, but I’m not against doing some more hole hopping. Most of my rods are 28″ long and I don’t see the extra 4″ making that much difference as far as hooksetting room in the portable. I have a Frabill trekker its kinda a big one man small two man house. What do you guys think?

I ordered a 32 inch power noodle this morning with the recoil guides. I alreadt own several of the 24 inch power noodles. I want a loger rod for open ice. The Quiverstick is another option at 32″. Its a graphite rod where the Power Noodle is Fiberglass. The Qstick offers unreal sensitivity while those noodle rods have a backbone like no other.

I have a Frabil Ranger and I’ll be able to use the longer rod in there so it won’t be used just outdoors. Personally I think the longer rods are better hook setting tools.

One thing to keep in mind is that any order you place with Thorne Bros is a custom order and they will hand you a rod any length you want as long as its able to be made using one of their stock blanks. 25″, 27 1/2″ 31 1/4″….Lonnie can do it.

    Eyesfishin,

I have both the 32 & 28 perch sweetheart and prefer the 28 over the 32 for both outside and inside. Go with the 28, you will not be disappointed.
It is perfect for perch fishing and has the backbone to handle any size walleye. I landed a 28″ walleye while perch fishing with it without an issue.

    Good luck!

Given that situation, I’d get either a 28″ outside perch or 28″ perch with recoil guides. Use the bigger guides or recoil guides either way such that you have less ice-buildup when fishing outside, but get the 28″ rod if you’re concerned about hooksets inside the house.

I agree with Tom completely, you won’t believe how much better hooksets you’ll get outside with the room for a longer rod, but if you’re inside a house predominantly it would hinder more than help.

EyesFishin, any chance you will be at the ice show next weekend? IF so, take both a 28 and 32, go inside a frabill house like yours and see how much room you have with each rod, you may be surprised. If you won’t be making it, I personally would prefer the 28″ rod inside the house.
