If everyone had a choice of a Ice Fishing vacation either long weekend or a full week. Where would he/she go ? I’m talking a place that is’nt more than say 12-14 hr drive (I say that because I live in N Ill. and Baudette is about 12 hrs). And a place one could catch decent Walleye,Crappie,Perch. We’ve been talking about a trip like this for a while and this year we’d like to actually do it. Any suggestions

Either Lake of the Woods, Leach or Red would get my vote for those 3 species

LOW for sure. Wigwam, Sportsman’s… Sportsman’s Oak Island is a nice place. A touch quieter at the Angle vs the mainland, which is nice.

Or instead head south with the boat and go after some stripers or crappies in Kentucky/Tennesee/etc…

Reely it depends how hard you want to fish, if your going to move a lot in attempt to find the hottest bite or if you want to show up to a warm house and fish. Lotw has a ton of great options for lodgeing on shore and fish out of day houses witch will be set up for you. At Red you will find sleeper houses are the goto out there for right around 50$ a day you can stay right on the fish about 3 to 10 miles off shore. Both are great options you need to pick one that suits your needs the best

I would say hands down LOW! My buddies and I had talked about LOW for 3 years and always ended up just talking about it. End of last Jan, we were tired of chasing pan fish in small ponds/lakes in Iowa! We called and made reservations, took our flip over and away we went. Got there talked to some people went out on Adrians road far as could, found area with no to little holes drilled and caught all the fish we wanted!!

I will, haven’t been online for a few days and I would jump at Rainy in a heartbeat. You have little to no pressure, world class fishing, for crappie, walleye and pout. Contact Chris Granrud for a great Rainy lake ice fishing expierence.

We’re still “Catching under the Radar”…..and many locals prefer it to stay that way!! Lots of great fisheries to choose from without question. I love the the Winter Walleyes in the solitudes of Voyageurs National Park. Something about doing something that not everyone else is. I guess I’ve always been like that. Tough for me to put a price tag on that, and the precise reason we live here. Many anglers often prefer fishing off plowed grids across the lake. That is not a specialty on Rainy Lake. I personally hope it never is. Easy access draws mass. Hunting or fishing. For those who like the adventure, and want to get off the beaten path as we titled a big walleye shoot a couple years ago…….Saddle up!! Regardless of your choice have a great time on the ice this season!!
