Gill pill knots

I’m going to try and use gills pills more this year since I have like 60 of them. I never really actually stuck with them for more than 15 minutes or so but I know they catch fish so I’m going to have one rod rigged with one at all times. My question is what kind of knots do you perfer pertaining to the action of the bait? I use 4lb flouro and use the double surgeons 99%. With this loop it gives the bait a nice bouncing action. Then I will use a super tight clinch and pull the knot back towards the hook for a horizontal presentation. Or do you prefer to let it hang at its original 45 degree angle? Just wondering what knots you prefer and why? Thank you, Dan

Hey Dan! How the heck ya been? I never stuck w/ the gill pill much myself. Good questions, maybe we will learn something and I’ll learn to trust it more!

Hope all is well! See ya soon on some ice!

The last couple of years that I have used the Gill Pill I like to tighten up the knot and fish it horizontal…

I have caught fish both ways when I was just lazy and didn’t want to re tie or straighten out the jig when the bite was fast and furious…

But when the conditions were tuff, I believe the bight was better when presented horizontal.

I normally use the polymer and sometimes a clinch. I want my gill pill horizontal with a spike. I use sizes 12 and 14. But recently decided to try size 16 some this year. I am afraid with the 16s I may have to drop down to 1 pound line from 2 pound which I currently use. The reason I say this is that you said you use 4 pound line and assume you are using size 10 or 12. I mainly try to imitate zoo plankton with a slow fall and very little movement for the more finicky fish.

    No-Knot

I use a palomar knot line side. Keep in centered over the eyelet. I embrace No-Knot Snaps because presentations are delivered in a more natural state. Verticle designed jigs are presented verticle and horizontal designed jigs are presented horizontal.
Certainly can not dispute the speed in which a jig can be changed out. Not to mention time loss throughout the day adjusting and re-adjusting a knot over jig eyes.

How about a King Sling for your loop knot? A buddy turned me on to it last season and I use it alot for the verticals.

I like to use the double surgeons knot because its really easy to tie and is very strong in my book. When your hands are cold I hate trying to tie anything complicated for me . As for the no-knot I mainly use them for lil-cecils or other small spoons. Do they affect the action of the baits? I know they come in a bunch of differant sizes. They are sure handy when you have to switch up often. I just think the loop gives the bait a better action. Thanks for the replies and I’ll give the gill pill more attention this year. Dan
