Drill some holes, put suckers on quick strikes, use a fuzzy duzzit or some type of jigging lure, jigging from hole to hole around the suckers to help call ’em in. Use a known location where you have access to deep water. Good luck, tried once as the WI muskie season closes on Nov. 30.

Lol… Yeah, there is a reason nobody targets them through the ice.

Maybe this should be in ski forum…but why shouldn’t they be targeted in the winter months?
What’s the reason behind this?

Look for them in shallow water near points and shoreline bars. Other structure, like inside turns and rock piles, are always an added bonus.
As winter progresses Muskie move out toward mid-lake humps. It’s interesting how this move resembles mid summer fishing. One reason for this move is the water is just a bit warmer in deeper water which is more comfortable for them and keeps them more active.

if the DNR man asks, you are fishin’ for big northerns.
Maybe it’s this mentality coupled with a statewide 34″ minimum lenght limit that draws all you Wisconsin guys to MN to catch our trophy muskies?
February 9, 2011 at 11:06 pm #935819Musky season is closed during the winter months. I do,however, hear of many muskies caught through the ice on White Bear. Many times those catches occur while fishing for crappies. In late December,my friend caught a 38incher while fishing a deep weed edge in 18 FOW . There also was a 50 incher caught in 15 FOW a couple weeks ago. Both of these were caught using wax worms for bait.
February 10, 2011 at 2:29 am #935887I have seen and landed a few as well while fishing crappies. The most recent was this last December a 44 through a 7 inch hole on White Bear. Caught it on an ultra light. 2lb test and a Northland Forage minnow spoon and a minnow head. Swam away after a pic and really quick measurement.

Don’t you remember, they get to much pressure in the summer, so people that only fish thru the ice have to give them a break so there all rested up and fat for summer fishing.
Beside ice anglers always pick them up by the eyeballs and kill them.
