Salted minnows

Hello fellow hard water types. On an occasional video I notice ice fisherman using salted minnows from their bait pucks.

After surfing a bit I found a standard recipe but still feel uneducated on the subject. What is your recipe? I bet you can buy them already salted. But are they as good? So forth and so forth.

I love the idea of not getting the hands wet while fishing minnows from a bucket at 5 below. Send some knowledge my way.

…and do some minnows types salt better than others? Like say, fatheads vs suckers.

We arent fortunate enough to use live minnows out west here bud, all we use are frozen and salted minnows. The local companys net minnows from our river system and sell them, and others are just a standard baitfish. I dont like using frozen minnows with huge chunks of salt, prefer a light salt.
Could also try GULP Minnows!

…and what about sawdust? How is that done? Dried? Frozen? Better or worse than salt?

Some years ago for a Quetico Canoe trip Vados Bait suggested I mix canning salt and sugar 50-50. When entering Quetico Park via water from the American side live minnows are not allowed. Spread the mixture on a cookie sheet, scoop the live minnow with minimum water onto the mixture. They die quickly. Let them dry and after 2-3 days put them into zip lock bags for transport or storage. I have done this several times and had good results. They work well with a jig for walleyes and on one trip lake trout.

never seen sawdust used on minnows, maggots etc but not minnows so I couldnt tell you boss..
