Last year I tried out a new rod holder for my Otter Ice House. These rod holders clamp onto the square tubing on my Otter and hold true..

One thing I found by accident was how well it worked as a tip down in the ice house…The handle that cradles the reel has such a smooth swivel that I could drop a crappie minnow down on a small Aberdeen hook and when the crappie would swim away with it the rod will swing down towards the hole…

Just thought I would share this with the rest of you ice heads…

You sly dog you Great info

They also work great off a bucket. I did need to add a shim so it could be clamped down tight. A waxie tin worked great as a quick fix.

If the rod was being watched, the spring bobber was also a great way to detect the bite giving a guy a little time to get there, then while running to the set up the rod holder took over and let the set up tip towards the hole. The way the reel sits into the seat is also a bonus. It would take some work to get that rod pulled through the hole. If the drag is set correctly I can’t believe that spinning reel is going anywhere. With that said….I’ll make a post if/when it happens

When using this set up outside, I prefer the temps to be 30 or better. If much lower skimming holes to prevent line freeze up becomes a pain for me. Unless that is all that is working

PS: The spring set up will also tell you if something came up with your bait. If that tip goes still while sportin’ an active minnow or, if it looks like weight was lifted…set the hook
