Here’s the scoop on the channels through the ice on Petenwell. You can use three lines per angler, so we usually use one jigging rod and two tip ups, or two rods and one tip up.
You can catch the cats, Walleyes, Crappies and white bass on your tip ups, but the majority will be on jigging rods. I catch 90% of my cats on either a rattling flyer spoon or jigging Rapala. You will know when you have a cat on your flasher because the line will be very thick and very red. Sometimes they will come in 3-4′ off the bottom but most of the time they come in right off the bottom.
Typically I will use a 2-3′ jigging motion to get the attention of the fish, then when they come in start slowly jigging them up. With the cats, often times you have to jig them a few feet off the bottom then slowly drop the bait past them and they will nail it.
A lot can change in the next month, so I’m not 100% sure which of the spots we’re going to start at. We’ll know a lot more the week before or week of the GTG. I’m planning on making sure we have some kind of transportation on the ice to get people to and from the landing.
If we have good ice next Saturday, Pat Howard, myself and Marbleeyes will probably head over to check things out. As soon as we get over there, I’ll look up the bar/pub in Necedah that we’ve eaten at before. I’ll post that info back as early as this weekend.
This should be a good time. There are a good number of Walleyes in this lake as well as some giant crappies and loads of white bass. We will do everything we can to make sure we have a good bite lined up for everybody.
