I looking at getting a new stikemaster with a solo engine and am wondering if there is a big difference between the 2.5 and 3hp engines. I dont know anyone that owns one so I am looking for owners opinions on them. All input is appreciated. Thank you

    I’ve owned them both.

The first time you run the 2.5 you’ll think you’re cutting with the most impressive ice auger ever made. IF there was no 3 HP version you would NEVER feel like you needed anything more.

And then you pull the throttle on the 3 HP version for the first time… simply amazing!

If you regularly fish on thick ice (25″ – 30″ PLUS) and you’re one of those guys that punches dozens upon dozens of holes in a day… the 3 HP is worth the extra $$.

IF you punch 10 holes a day or you don’t run into 30″+ ice very often… the 2.5 will do more than you’ll ever ask of it.

Either way you’re getting an auger that is in a whole new class when compared to the Tecumseh powered versions that were retired two winters ago. If those Tecumseh powered augers represent your last hands on experience with a Strikemaster… you’re in for an eye opener the first time you hit the throttle.

I agree with James, I was in the same situation last year and went with the 2.5. It is all the auger that I need and more. I don’t cut a ton of holes on a normal outing but there are times when I will cut 50 plus holes and it is a breeze with the 2.5

Thanks, I think I will go for the 3hp because of the run and gun days. The faster I get the holes drilled the more fishing time I get. I have yet to see the solo in action yet but they do sound impressive. The current 2 hp tends to get a little boggy in deep ice, so bad jiffys have beaten it.
