I am curious as to when people use wide or narrow beam on their locators. It will be interesting to hear the different reasons. Thanks in advance.

I use narrow beam when I’m fishing around structure like trees or fish cribs as well as fishing in areas that have a fair amount of vegetation.

Works great to eliminate interference when fishing
in close proximity to another sonar device.

I agree with the previous 2 posts, I also use narrow beam when fishing a sharp break. On wide angle your return signal is going to find the shallower bottom and leave you with a few feet of not seeing your lure or fish on the flasher. Switching to narrow beam allows that cone angle to condense and become more specific directly below the hole vs a wide angle.

Being new to ice fishing I value the info. It sounds like the narrow beam has more uses than deep water.

    Thanks again

I’ll also switch to narrow beam fishing in the same shack with a partner so their jig/bait doesn’t show up on my locator…

Great question… In-Depth Outdoors put together a fairly detailed video on this topic that I’ll put up here on monday. ’Tis the season!

I also like the narrow beam when fishing in schooling shad, it cuts the clutter by 75%

    Hi Jeff

Here’s a video that covers the use of the narrow beam functionality on a MarCum.
