Anyone successfully used their augers for drilling fence posts? I may try getting an earth bit and giving it a go.

I’ve used my old Jiffy many times for digging post holes. If you hit a big tree root or rock it gets a little hairy but for the most part works great! I just use an old ice blade and haven’t had any trouble.

I had the same thought so last week I bought the earth auger at menards, brought it home, hooked up to my Jiffy. I fired it up started drilling, but nothing happened. As it turns out the earth auger has a backwards spiral (or some might say my ice auger is backwards). But anyway it doesn’t work. I put my ice auger on and tested it out last night. It worked just fine, much easier than doing it by hand and if I ruin my blade (which I expect I will) it is only $30, much cheaper than even a half day rental.

    Hope this helps.

I did this a few years back when I was putting up a priviacy fence. Worked great until I hit a large rock and bent the shaft of the auger. Would have just been cheaper to do it by hand.

Don’t use your auger i did it and it bent my drill where the actual drill bit goes and i had to buy a whole new drill it also wrecked the drill bit. Unless you will be going thru soft stuff i would not.

    Rent a post hole digger.
They have a clutch so you don’t break your arms if you hit something solid.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like it’s hit or miss on success. I would hate to wreck my auger so ill probably find another solution.

X2 for renting one. It’s worth it. Definitely.
