Anybody know what the ice is like in the north Metro? Isanti area? Wondering if a guy can still walk out or not? I usually need a plank to get on this lake late, I would imagine the shorelines are going by now…. or gone….

    Use CAUTION

I was out on Monday and the ice is really starting to pull away from shore and get soft. I looked at old 10 inch holes there were the size of garbage can lids, BIG OLD HOLES!!
I had a very close call, which to be honest, I think my blood preasure is still way out of wack today.

IF you go, I would suggest not going alone, bring a life vest or throwable and some good ice spikes. Also have some hand spikes just to be safe, if you go in, your gonna want a way out. That water is cold, be smart

Not sure about the north metro but I’m heading out in the south metro tonight to see about getting in one more ice fishing trip. I’m thinking I should find someplace on the south shore to get on. Let’s hope so anyway. Hard to believe there were trucks all over there on Sun. and now 3 days later we may have a hard time just getting on.

So when are you thinking about going to lake Francis? The landing was shot on sunday. Ice was broken out a good 75′. There might be some places to get on like near the swimming beach. I would be willing to go if you are looking for comapny.

I was out on Chisago last night. First 5 or 6 feet from shore was open water, but ice was ok once we got on. Most holes we drilled still had about two feet and while not severely honeycombed, that process is well underway.

Though mentioned several times above, safety can’t be stressed enough. Travel with a buddy, wear a life jacket, ice picks and have something to throw, just in case. There just isn’t a fish worth risking your life for. Most years my last outing consists of realizing its just not safe and that having a cold one at the landing, watching the sun set and enjoying the return of the ducks and geese is the smart thing to do.

And yes, be careful of the open holes. Managed to avoid all of the drilled holes walking in last night, but found one right near the landing that must have scoured its way open from running water coming down the landing over the last week. Really weird, as it went all the way to the bottom, but was at a 30-45 degree angle and didn’t reflect back any light from the lantern. Dropped all the way through (two feet or so) and went down hard. Fortuntately, I’m only dealing with a really sore knee and not broken leg…freak thing!
