i had a weird thing happen today i lost 6 fish that felt nicer then the 2 10 inchers on the ice

what was happening is id set the hook as soon as id grab the line theyd come off i dont use my reel and dont like bobbers

i dont use my reel simply due to finding the right depth

is there a way of marking the line at the depth your fishing and still reeling it in

    thanks

use a slip bobber, like a wing it, and a bobber stop, like a gizmo or a bone…I stay away from the tie on types because they have a tendency to come loose, and being inaccurate

When fishing water deeper than 12-15 ft. with spinning reels,I use a rubber band. Let line out till you reach the correct depth, then put a rubber band around the spool. Now set the hook and reel up your fish! When you open the bail and let line down again, it will stop at the rubber band, putting you at the correct depth again

That is a good one also crappie tom, but I have had problems in the past when that bobber stop hits the rod tip eye as I’m reeling in. It has a tendancy to stay in front of the rod tip and slide down the line as the line is coming in before it finally hops up and goes thru the rod eyes.

Couple of good ideas Big B and Crappie Tom, I have tried every kind of slip bobber on the ice rods and always have trouble when it gets icy on the tip and the stop moves or hangs up for a second or less when I reel in. I also go back to ice rods with large eyelets and have learned to stay away from the very small eyelets with slip bobbers. Thanks!

I’ve had really good luck with the ‘gizmo’ and ‘bone’ type bobber stops….even with my ugly ice rods they’ve been going through nicely-as long as you point the tip towards the hole (as tom mentioned) you won’t have any problems. You’ll remember to do it after you find youself fishing about 10 feet from the bottom a couple times from the stop slipping. I just use the excuse that I was checking for suspended fish(I fish with a locator, so the excuse usually doesn’t have much credibility). The one and only problem I’ve had with using the stops is dropping the line back down the hole-it likes to hang up on the stop in the spool at times, which is more of a nuisance than a problem. Another thing you could do is get the absolute smallest crimp on bb weight and use that as a marker-I’ve used them as stops from time to time when in a pinch

Theres only one solution to this problem and its a common problem.
You need to get a Vexilar FL-18

Uh-Oh, better not ruin a thread with a debate …I thought the Marcum LX3 would do the trick.

If you are using a heavy enough lure you can drop it to the bottom and count how many turns you are coming up from the bottom. When you catch a fish you can reel back to the same spot.

Derek, been using the vex for 4 years now. But many times I’m in a lot of tree tops and it can sometimes be hard to pin point the lure in all that garbage. I know what you were getting at though. Good thought.

Big B, when you put a rubber band on your spool how does your drag work if you hook into a big one. I would think that would be a problem. I do like Adam does, count the revolutions off the bottom if my lure it heavy enough.

Otherwise, the LX-3 works perfect for this

    Scott,
The drag works fine. The spool and rubber band both turn nicely. However, the depth may need to be reset.

I must be missing something, still doesn’t make sense to me. I can see how the spool will turn, how does the line come off once you get to the rubber band?

If you are using most of the superbraids, you can mark your line with a magic marker. The mark will stay on the line for a few outings and then fade away.

I use the bobber stop method but I tie so it is just in front of the reel so it does not have to go through any guides.

    Scott,
I am using 2# trilene mono on a Berkely ultralight lr reel. When the drag slips the line slides freely from under the rubber band……………B
