Anyone out there would give me a idea what handheld GPS works good for icefishing location. I know that a lot of people use these things now and they tell me that they work great. Should you get one with a compass ,or map? I would like to get with in 6ft. of where I was.

I bought a Lowrance H20 through Cabellas a while ago… they were pretty cheap (compared to old price) as I think they are being discontinued. I like it because it uses my Lakemaster chip, and the general functions are similar to my graph on the boat. I have the color model, but not sure those will be easy to find any longer. I bought it just for ice fishing.
March 5, 2010 at 3:22 pm #849581I don’t know where you live but Cabelas in Rogers MN has a sweet deal on just what your looking for tomorrow morning Cabelas ad
H20C for this price is a sweet deal…
this unit will have everything you need and then some..March 5, 2010 at 3:23 pm #849582I’ve been using a Lowrance h2oc GPS for years. It has an interface similar to Windows which makes it easy to use and it also has accepts mapping chips from LakeMaster.
When I’m traveling to a waypoint. This what I see on my GPS. Except the waypoint is a different icon style. This image was taken from my procontour software from lakemaster just to give you an idea of how simple/beautiful digital gps maps are.
March 5, 2010 at 3:52 pm #849596I had the H2O color with MN Lakemaster, it is an average unit, will get you where you need to be just fine. Going to a Garmin GPS Map76CX from Wade at Jolly Ann, with the MN Lakemaster. The main thing I was unhappy with was the small things, going through batteries like candy, slow in aquiring satellites, having troubles with the power cable, sending it in a couple times with crappy customer service..just stuff that drove me nuts. I may have the same troubles again, but I”d be kicking myself for not giving it a try. As I understand the antenna in the Garmin is much more accurate, the battery life is far superior, but it does cost a bit more. Just my two cents.

$20 to the first person to tell me what lake that is
IN A PM!!
Like I didn’t have any work to do today! I’m going to assume the year of the chip doesn’t matter.
Bet someone could get $20 from everyone else if it’s NOT in a PM.
March 5, 2010 at 7:20 pm #849742My H2O with the black and white screen does not work in sub-zero cold weather if I leave it out. I guess the screen cannot work when cold. I have to keep it in my breast pocket and bring it out for a short while to read it. My brother-in-law has the H2Oc color unit and his works in the sub-zero temps. His complaint is short battery life. Both work well for finding stored waypoints.
March 5, 2010 at 7:39 pm #849759I have a Garmin NUVI that I bought last June. I have Lakemaster chip in it. It will and does also work for turn by turn in my truck. I have used it ice fishing and I don’t always get to within 6′ of my waypoints, but sometimes yes. I use it in my boat in the summer also, works well. IF you have it on all day, it will need to be charged by plugging into lighter outlet. I did NOT take on canoe trip as it does NOT take regular batteries so I knew I would be done in a few days. It works great for ice fishing as I only turn it on when I move to new spot. So far so good – specific state lake maps show lots more detail than multiple state maps.
