Ruger2506 and myself spent the last weekend in Milwaukee on Lake Michigan chasing Steelies and Browns. We knew that a 10″ auger would be the best option for getting them out of the hole. We guessed right as almost everyone there with a power auger was running a 10″ bit 3hp, all Jiffy. Every one of those bits would hang-up busting through the bottom. The did STX faired a bit better than the single chipper. I have a Jiffy 8″ on a 2hp and have no hang up at the bottom. Is it just becauce the 2″ more is that much more difficult even with 50% more hp?
Do Lazer 10″ hang up like that too?
Secondly, you guys would be amazed with all the dull augers I saw. Cutting through 8-10″ of ice would take them longer than me punching holes on LOW in March…WOW –Mark

No, they cut pretty consistent all the way through. Particularly now with the Solo power heads and the extra ponies. The motors don’t slow down at all under load so you carry the RPMs all the way through the cut.

Our group joke is… “he must have it in reverse.” We saw some guys up on Cass drilling holes with augers that couldn’t have had any blades at all at the rate they made progress through the ice. My favorite is when the lead guy calls over a buddy to throw his weight on the opposite handle so they can both hang from the auger.

I’ll never figure out how guys can put up with that. But they do.

I’m going to say yes. The auger hung up a bit in 24″ of ice right at the end of the hole. But, I know that the blade wasn’t really sharp either. I know it hasn’t happened in the past.

I have a 9″ auger and as long as the blades are sharp and good, I have no issues.

I’ve got a lazer mag express with a 10″ auger that I’ve drilled ALOT of holes with and never have any problem with it hanging up on the bottom of the hole. I don’t know the specs on em, but it seems to be geared a little lower than the jiffy.

I have a 10″ jiffy and put a new bit on it this year and I still have to work it a bit at the bottom. The ice is harder where it makes contact with the water is what I heard. Heard that on an episode of dirty jobs But until I hit the bottom it flies through smoothly..

I have a 10″ Jiffy STX and keeping the blades sharp is key to a good consistent cut. I was sitting on the lake yesterday watching people drill holes and well over half of them were drilling with dull blades. It looked like a lot of work! I said to my buddy, “What a waste of technology!” For me going fishing should not be work. Your auger should do the work for you.

We took a trip last month and one of the guys in the group was bringing his auger so I opted to leave mine at home. When we arrived the guys started drilling holes and WOW I could have drilled faster with a butter knife! Later in the afternoon after moving a few times I asked him where his gas can was so I could fill er up (You sure do burn through a lot of gas when each hole takes 5 minutes to drill). What gas can? He didn’t bring any gas. So my buddy had to run to town and buy a gas can, oil and gas. For me this is unacceptable. If I am traveling from my home lake I bring gas and check my equipment before I go. After this trip I vowed I will never leave home with out my auger when traveling. I don’t care who is bringing what. I know my equipment is solid and will get the job done right.

Taking care of your equipment which allows it to function properly in all conditions sure can make for a much more enjoyable day

I hear ya clucking big chicken. Most times when traveling a good distance we will bring a back up auger and heater. not that you can buy a heater on the go but noone want to quit to go get it. We have never needed the extras but you know if we didnt have them we would have. Little things pay big dividends, espicially when traveling couple hundred miles. dont need to drag them on the ice, just leave at truck. -Mark

Yes, Strikemasters hang up just like Jiffy’s. I’ve seen many Lazer Mag Expresses do this.

Yo fishy! ill give you something to try and anyone else that has a problem with hang ups at the end of a hole!

I got a 10″ jiffy and with brand new blades it would hang up just a little! but then i took a closer look!

when you put your blade on you can bolt it flush to the bottom of the auger and this will give you a deeper faster cut not a lot faster but faster!

If you bolt it to the top side of the mounting plate on the bottom of auger your cut is not as deep and there are absolutely no hang ups what so ever! now it takes you 10 seconds to go threw 2 feet of ice instead of 8!
