It started out pretty fast today. 2 min after the shack was up my buddy’s pole was bent over with the drag screaming, then it let go… A minute later mine was doing the same. 1 lb test line with a frosty jig and a waxie I was lucky to pull this guy up through the hole. It’s nothing like Chris gets but on 1 Lb test it was a fight, and its my first northern through the ice. After not ice fishing for a couple years its been a good year with a mix of cappie, gills and sauger. Already looking forward to next year with a gas auger and targeting some bigger fish.

Very nice BJR!!! I had the very same thing happen to me except I lost mine right at the bottom of the hole. Boy they really can run when they want to, nothing better to get the heart pounding!

I would guess more lucky . We fish this lake a lot for some jumbo perch and gills, but it’s notorious for it’s pike. Its not uncommon to get bit off while panfishing there. Is it common for northeren to hit on small jigs and waxies? There are plenty of tip ups that hold more attractive bait for these guys there, just a fluke?

Ask Jonny P about how many large pike find their way through an 8″ hole on Upper Red Lake?

Congrats! I had the same thing happen to me yesterday. 1 lb test and a black shrimpo! Stupid thing busted my reel it was working the drag to hard.

Gators were on the chew yesterday! Nice job!

Thats a pretty good fish on one pound test line. So how does that test line work for you. I mainly use 2#. Do you think there is a big difference going to 1#? The smallest I ahve ever used is 3/4#. This was for small brookies on a pond.

Not a fluke! They will hit a small jig and waxie! My personal challege for the past 8 years has been to land one on 2# with no success. Way to handle the 1#! I usually get bit off or the line rubs and breaks on the edge of the hole when they run.

    Mike,
I only use 1 lb test on one of my rods and I think after this year I will be moving up to 2 lb test as a min. The diameter of the 1 lb makes it hard to handle and tie to the small jigs, for me anyway. If there is any inconsistency in the line it doesn’t take much to break it off. A nice perch or any decent fish will stretch this line causing it to coil. I have 3 lb on my other rod and seem to have just as many bites with that line as the 1 lb and its easier to tie especially with cold hands.

Great job!! I have trouble breaking 1# line when I pull on it to tighten a knot.
