Been having really good luck on crappies this year using a Red Glow Diamond jig tipped with the tail half of a crappie minnow. Not sure why but this setup has been catching the larger crappies when every other setup is only catching smaller fish. I always start fishing the jig about 1 ft above the fish. If a fish comes up to the lure but does not bite it in a few seconds I raise the bait another foot. I keep doing this until the fish either bites or drops back down twards the bottom. this has worked well for me this year.

For me this year it has been the Northland forage minnow for perch/crappie and recently the glow ratfink for night time crappie.

I have been bangin the forage minnow tipped with a minnow head on the bottom and then lifting and holding it less than 6 inches from the bottom. I have also been able to bring a few crappies to the hole with this presentation but it seems like thay are the real active fish.

With the slow bite I’ve been experiencing the last few weeks I have downsized to to the smallest glow ratfink available tipped with only one waxie. During peek feeding times I can jig above the fish to bring active feeders to the hole. Outside of the active window I have been dead sticking this presentation to bring the finicky fish to the hole. The slow fall of the ratfink seems to work very well in peeking the interest of the neutral/negative fish.

A few years ago my son and I were up to Moose Lake Mn. My mother had a cabin at the time. We were fishing in about 12 foot of water and on a weed edge. The crappies were on that weed edge for a good 3 days and we catch fish from sun up to sun down. We, believe it or not we got tired of catching them. It was one of them times that it was one right after other. We were using a little black beetle grub. It was just awesome. All the fish was released and we had one meal one night of crappie fillets. We are heading back up there with my son and his son this year and I hope we can run in to the crappies and northerns. That is the plan.

so like always you are on here with no clue either, but feel the point to chime in? and I expect you to not even see this and not respond as you do not need this post since you are pounding them and want to keep it a secret,

or you are catching just as much as me, except 1 thing…..you have been out fishing and I have not yet this year.

Good thread idea Jeff! I use several types of jigs, depending on water conditions (depth, flow, clarity etc…)
    My favorites…Walleye/Sauger
    with plastics…H2O Precision…3/16oz…chart/org,firetiger
or sour apple, depends on water clarity…

    Crappie
    3/32 plain H2O and a mini tube jig…colors vary

    Bass
3/16 or 1/4 swim jig…. natural craw or blue/black with soft plastic trailer…absolutely deadly on Bass!

Finest ice jig ever made is the Ratso in purple or black.

Zebra gils pils and glow diamond jigs for sunnies and crappies. Tip these either with euro larvae, gulp or half a wax worm.

Give me a holler if you want to get out some time. I havent been finding much for size but do still catch a lot of fish each trip out.

Yes, definately one of my favorites. People tend to overlook black jigs. When the fish just aren’t biting try something black and you might be surprized in a good way. I wish berkley’s line of gulp! alive would come in the color black.
