I got out on the pond yesterday for about 4 hours. I was after sumo perch but only ended up with around 45 perch iced all about 4-8″ and 11 tulibee around 12″. Almost all my perch came on any jigging spoon I had down tipped with waxies. I also got a few dead sticking some crappie and fathead minnows. I got nothing on colored or plain euro larvae. I fished the deep side of a flat in 36fow and marked fish constantly, I think I had 1 time for about 3 seconds when there wasnt any fish on the flasher. I had started in 26fow and was marking fish that would only give chase all the actively biting fish were in the deeper water.

A question for you Mille Lacs perch guys, if I am in an area where there is all these smaller perch are the sumos around?

I have found, if your catching smaller perch, move a little. Eventually a bigger one may come through, but the best thing to do is have a guy……. say Grow punching holes all around the area and drop your camera down and take a peek. Typically they are around, but you need to get on top of them to get any amount

I’ve typically found that if you’re on the small perch out deep (30-35), you’re close. You’ve found a rare spot that they feel safe in. Those Jumbos are never going to stay still. The good thing is if there are Jumbo’s in the area, They’re usually very aggressive towards the spoons. You know what a 4-8″ perch looks like on the MarCum so don’t waste precious water time on them.

I second that. We were up last sunday before the Vikes walloped the Cowgirls. I found a deep edge, 35ft and change and there were small blips constantly with a few tulibee marks here and there. Moved away from the thin marks and found a few really dang nice perch. 13″ was the biggest. kept 5 more in the 10″ to not quite 12″ range. And a couple of tulibees. I have a question about tulibees on mille lacs. Do they get to alomost 18″ in length or are there whitefish on mille lacs? I caught what i thought was a pretty big guy. the more i got to thinking about it i wondered if it may have been a whitey. Oh and we never did find a walleye. Trying my hardest to get the gal to hook into a big mama. She’s almost as intense a fisher(wo)man as me and I can’t wait to see her face when she gets a sow on the ice.
