    Hi,
I just recently added two fly reels to the arsenal to help stay away from line twist, but don’t want to spend that kind of money to equip all the rods.
What do you do to prevent line twist on the smaller ice reels?
    Thanks

There is no way to eliminate line twist as long as you are using spinning reels. Spinning = Twist The smaller the spool the more twists it takes to reel your line in, and the unfortunate thing is if you go with a larger spool you are adding weight. If you have ever used a camera when fishing to watch your jig you would notice that your jig will spin several times before comming to a stop. You get extra twists when you catch a fish, you see when you catch a fish the fish will not allow your line to turn over with every revolution of the bail. When you don’t have a fish on the jig will turn over easily. Basically you have a few choices, 1) you can change all of your reels over to either fly or bait casting reels. 2) Change your line to a softer more flexable line. 3) Get bigger spinning equipment.

Many times if your line is coiling it was put on backwards. When spooling your reel put about 1/3 of spool on see if it pops or coils off. If it does flip the spool over and you should be good to go.

Nothing worse than when the line coils. I’ve been using pline ice line 2lb on my pannie rods and 3lb on my walleye rods.

    1. Remember to ALWAYS close bail by hand and NOT the handle ,that also causes line twist.

2.Having a drag set too light will cause line twist if realing in a fish and the does not take in line,est.3 twist per one turn of handle.

Hope this helps, along with the other suggestions above.

I fish a lot of deep water here and line twist is always something to deal with. A lot of problems come from the line being put on backwards like the above poster says. Add a tiny barrel swivel above your bait about as long as your rod length and it will diminish the issue. I bring along extra line just in case and only put on as much line as you need. When fishing 55 feet of water I use 70 feet of flourocarbon.

You can iron your mono .Open your bail, hold line tight enough between your thumb and finger so when you pull line thru you feel it generate a little heat and stretch the line.I usually do a little more than the deepest I’m fishing. Also switched to “vanish” 2# seems better than trilene I was using.Hope this helps
