So, after spending the day yesterday doing what the girlfriend wanted to do (and I thought fishing could get expensive! ) I got her to agree on coming out for the first time for some ice fishing. My goal or hope is that it will let her see first hand how much fun this can be and that Im staying out of trouble she likes to fish in the summer and has had a blast the couple times we have been deep sea fishing so I think if we can get a few fish on the ice she will lighten up a little about me going. Probably wont be able to keep her from coming with every time if things go well any advise on what to try would be appriciated!

If you have or can use someones permanent shack it helps so she can keep warm, stand up and move around a little. I also use Tip Downs so there is something to look at other than a Marcum or spring bobber. Bring some snacks and hot chocolate. Maybe a little peppermint schnapps in the hot chocolate.

I took my girlfriend out for the first time last weekend and being able to drive out was nice so that she did not have to drag a shack out. We had a blast, she fell on her butt once even with creepers on. We only caught a couple of fish but she wants to go again. She even drilled a few holes and setup Tip Downs. Maybe I can just sit back and fish from now on!!!!

If her title is girlfriend at this point and there are no kids invovled then i say there is a huge RED flag waving right now.. If it is a problem now that you go ice fishing, I am here to tell you it will not get better. Do what you hae to do but I am just saying. lets just say, speaking from experience.

I gave my girlfriend a ring, now she is my wife and leaves me alone on the water during ice season, she used to try and tough it out. Ending quite a few trips waaaaay too early. Too much work to keep her out of trouble and warm out there… Best of luck!

Haha, I hear ya… I tend to go whether she likes it or not. Like i said though the goal is to maybe get her to understand my obsession with fishing a little better. Its not that she cares so much what im doing, but that i only have 2 days off a week and the last 5 weeks in a row i have spent all my time fishing and none with her

Hmmm,….So if I want to keep fishing with her I should hold off on the diamonds.

Wish I would have listened to the warnings from friends.

My wife would have nothing to do with the portable. We picked up a permanent a few weeks ago and now she wants to go all the time. She will relax and read a book if the fish aren’t biting. Our 2 1/2 yr old son will either play with his toys or the minnows until the action gets hot. I am pretty happy to get to spend time with the whole fam and still get to do my thing too! I do enjoy getting out alone now and then too. I can concentrate and bring in the lite biters a lot better.

As for girlfriends on the ice I had to give that up too!!

My girlfriend used to fish with me, which I loved. She would go every chance she could, rain or shine. Now that we are married, she goes about once or twice a year. It has to be 85 degrees, sunny, with no wind so she can work on her tan. I don’t typically do very well when she’s with anymore!

I tried to get my wife to go ice fishing with me. She said that she would go ice fishing with me if I went scrapbooking with her. It was amazing how quickly the conversation ended.

Besides, I really like having the extra space in my portable ice shack…

After being married to me for 30 years I finally got my wife to actually FISH with me in the summer. She used to just sit and read. Of course it helped that the first times she went she caught LOTS of fish (good guide). She was even OK with me buying a bigger boat now that she comes along too. Now ICEFISHING—-I got her to try it out once last year. I even bought her a new mini-spin reel so she did not have to mess with the whole bail thing. She got cold while I drilled and scouted. Once we found fish and set up the house she could be warm. Last week it was 25 degrees here and I invited her again out on the ice. I told her we would go to her favorite pond where she catches some nice fish in the summer. I offered to let her sit in the truck with the heater running while I drilled and scouted. She still turned me down. Oh well, she still lets me go out because she says she would rather see me out doing that than just sitting watching the tube.

I think its ok to take your girlfriend icefishing unless your wife finds out

Just wait until you have to move your shack because the current holes just became your girl friends toilet with your shack as the porta potty!

And let that be a warning to those who put the spring bobber in their mouth to thaw the ice buildup while following Mike and his gf.

For you single guys, taking your girl icefishing is the best way to find out if she is a keeper or not. If she goes, likes it and wants to go again, she might be a keeper. If she goes, likes it, drills the holes, sets up equipment and cleans the fish like mine, she is absolutely a keeper. Plus she likes to have fun in the shack if you know what I mean!!!!! The hot chocolate and peppermint schnapps helps with the shack fun!

Even if she doesn’t become a fisherwoman, the lifetime of happiness she will bring is well worth a few less fishing trips a year. (PS – if someone could secretly tell my wife I posted this, omitting this part in parenthesis of course, so I can get a few MORE trips in this year )

I take the g/f with whenever she has time, I get to go fishing every day during the winter thanks to my work schedule. Before i even met her she had her own lx-5 and she picked up a strikemaster suit for herself this winter also. She will sit in that shack for as long as i will, as long as i have the heater going for her.
