    Hey all,

I was reading elsewhere on the internet that some people use perch eyes as bait for perch and walleyes. Is that legal to do in Wisconsin and if so has anyone else had any luck with this approach?

I think it is legal as long as any perch caught and kept/used are counted in your daily legal bag limit… Not for sure, though… I’d check with the DNR. The online “chat” option for DNR contacts is a really nice feature.

I don’t think using perch eyes (or any part of a fish classifieds as a “game fish species”) is legal in MN. I’ve done it in other states where it is legal and they worked. I can’t say they worked any better than a minnow head… but the perch would eat them.

It’s not legal in MN…I do believe it is in WI, again any game fish used as bait in WI must be counted towards you’re daily bag limit.

Walleye cheeks don’t work well at all.

Thats good to know for my annual Winnibigosh trip in February. I was thinking of trying it then… I guess I’ll just stick to the Demon jig with a minnow head or the swedish pimples there.

Yep, illegal in Minnesota as others have said. It was my grandfathers go to bait on Devils Lake back in the day. He has two 2 1/2 pound perch on his wall and both were caught with perch eyes.

I heard last night that beaver tail is very good gil bait. Freeze it then take a chunk and slice it like a plastic tail…not sure but it would be worth a try…..

Brian’s correct and do not leave the eyeless perch on the ice after you leave. It qualifies as wanton waste. Seen it happen including the the fines.

Funny post, as someone else said… my Grandpa also used them! When we were at the shack on Millacs when I was young, he would do that and hammered them!
