For years I ran a fl8 and was very happy with it. Last year I bought a Marcum VX-1 and for the most part was very happy with it. Today, I fished the Croix, some of the time in 38-42 feet of water. I gotta tell ya, I had a very hard time picking up my jig down there, just not enough power! I’ll be upgrading to another unit next year, that’s for sure! Now I wonder what I’ve been missing with a stronger unit. The LX-5 is at the top my list, but I’d like to hear more about the new Birds too.

    Hey Brian,

I run my LX-5 along side with a lot of customers flashers. I have yet to see one that gives a clearer view of my presentation than that Marcum!! Spending 90% of my winter staring at the flasher really really REALLY makes you appreciate the Marcum technology. I would NEVER be without bottom lock either. You’ll love it Brian!! Probably be a good time to jump, because I doubt you’ll have much of a problem selling your used stuff right now.

Lastly keep in mind IF your fishing in a current area the additional depth may have your presentation pushed down current to the extent you can’t mark it well. If this is the case it is critical you drill 2 sets of holes in which you fish up current from your flashers hole.

    Flashers hole……..Sounds funny.

    Chris,

Wow! I hardly never fish rivers through the ice, I never even thought of that! Thanks for the tip, makes perfect sense. You’re still not talking me out of my new toy though!

I use an FL-8 now, and i really like it in comparision to the showdown.
I havent had any problems picking my bait up in upwards of 45ft… havent fished any deeper yet though!
