Hey guys just wondering what everyone likes for ice rods. I’m looking at making some changes. Now don’t take this the wrong way because I will still support St. Croix open water rods, but I just had a 28″ med premier shipped to me directly from St. Croix and the first guide down from the tip is at a 45 degree angle from the rest. Now I don’t expect the perfect rod for $20 but it would cost me half that to ship it back and have them send me a new one. Anybody have any experience with the Thorne Bros Custom or Jason Mitchell ice rods. Any help from panfish, perch, to walleye rods would be great.

I have noticed a lot of guys really like the Thorne Bros Sweetheart rods for eyes.
January 2, 2010 at 1:15 am #828661I’m full-blown addicted to the Thorne Rods. I ordered a custom 28″ Quiver Stick and a 36″ spoon rod 2 days ago in IDO logo colors… Red and white. I got to talk to Matt Johnson about the actions needed to accomplish each particular presentation I wanted and I got to talk directly to Lonnie, the head rod builder, about the components used in each rod. Comparing this experience to buying a rod built by the shipping container load from China… not even in the same ballpark.
January 2, 2010 at 1:33 am #828668I fish all thornes. From my 28″ quiverstick to my 45″ custom pro graphite for trout.

For anyone who has questions on the Thorne Bros rods please don’t hesitate to contact us and ask questions. We typically have several employees on hand who can answer just about any question pertaining to the rods. We’ll get you set-up with a rod that fits your exact needs!

After talking with Matt Johnson at the TB store, seeing their Rod making processes, and talking with other anglers, and finally after borrowing a few of Luke’s many TB rods for a test drive, I was sold. Top notch rods. Like many other things you get what you pay for and TB rods will make you a better fisherman.
January 2, 2010 at 11:17 pm #828887i HAVE ABOUT 10 ICE RODS ALLL MADE BY LONNY AT THORNE BROTHERS AND WOULD SUGGEST ONE OF THEM TO ANYONE OUT THERE. THE NEW QUIVERSTICK IS A PRETTY NICE OPTION TO START WITH AND THEN I WOULD SUGGEST A PERCH SWEETHEART. GOOD LUCK WITH DECIDING BUT JUST MY TWO CENTS IS TO GIVE THORNE BROTHERS A TRY. TALK TO MATT JOHNSON OR ANY OF THE OTHER GUYS THERE AND THEY WILL DIRECT YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
January 2, 2010 at 11:30 pm #828891What is the price point on TB ice rods vs other stuff on the market. I’m in need of a couple new rods. Looking specifically for a 32″ medium action rod for spoon fishing eyes and jumbo perch. Possibly something for gills that offers the sensitivity of a spring bobber.

Hey Kooty
Price depends on components used but here is the link to the TB site where you can shop a range of their rods.

A 32″ Perch Sweetheart (one of the more versatile rods they make) will set you back $63. I’ve used this rod for 1/8 oz. spoon the last couple years and it works well. I do prefer a little longer rod for outside use but the 32″ is a nice compromise should you want to bring it inside the shack once in awhile too.
As for a rod with spring bobber sensitivity… that’s the Quiver Stick. Honestly I’ve never felt anything quite like it in an ice rod. I just ordered a 36″ spoon rod and a lengthened Quiver Stick (28″) this past week that should be done this coming week.

January 3, 2010 at 12:47 am #501915I’m sold on TB rods, I have been using them for a long time, and I love them…
I think I have around 20 all together, and I don’t think I would get rid of any of them. Inside rods, outside rods, finesse rods,…the list goes on and on. Two of my newest are amazing, the power noodle and the quiverstick…they are both panfish rods, and both completely different. Quiverstick always has a gill pill on it, and powernoodle gets a ratso.
Here is pics of my newest CJS themed power noodle.
Titanium guides upgrade…
Matt is the man, give him call and chat with him, or any of the other TB staff, and they can help you pick out specific rods for how you fish…

January 4, 2010 at 2:11 am #829161Got to see the quiver stick in action today. Bob, Matt and I hit a local panfish lake. When he was lucky enough to mark a fish, he generally caught them. Me on the other hand, well, I was 0-24 before a hook up.
