I take a couple of trips to UT each winter (family out there) and do some ice fishing for trout. Tired of using a borrowed ancient Jiffy chipper or a hand auger so I picked up a Strikemaster from the Cabelas out there. Followed the instructions and it started with two quick pulls. Ran a tank of gas thru it to make it sure it was ready for the ice. We were fishing in sub zero temps at 7000 ft and the auger performed flawlessly. Cut thru some very cruddy ice, reopened holes with no effort. I run a Nils here in MN and I would say the Strikemaster performs as well as my Nils. Just read the instructions and you will have no issues

Glad your new auger worked like it should. I guess the only issue they may have is if you drop one and break the handle. That is the thing about the internet it is rare to hear positive remarks. Most things you hear about are negative remarks, but really that makes sense. Why would the masses get on line to say hey my product works like it should, and I couldn’t be happier.

Buddy of mine, a Lazer Mag owner for years, took my Solo Lazer Pro today and punched a few holes with it. He said there was a noticable difference in the engine, i.e. more power, RPMs. We will see how it holds up as compared to his (his Lazer Mag has been a workhorse for a long time).

I thought I’d never give up my Strikemaster Lazer of 13 trusty years, but I used a new Solo 3hp not too long ago and there is a huge difference! Light, fast and effortless drilling. Next year I will have to upgrade.

I’ve used the Nils, and it’s an excellent auger, but since I’m not very tall (and that auger is, for me) it felt uncomfortable to use. I’ve never needed my extention for my Strikemaster (still new in the bag) so I can’t justify the long auger shaft.

Love mine also, I bought the 2.5 hp 8″ auger and it cuts like going through butter. The weight of the auger is all that is needed to cut, plenty of power and fast! Starts on 2 or 3 pulls every time. I even had it fall off of my sled which is an older Frbill that has the tall tub, I thought for sure something would be broken. Not a scratch on it!

The Nils also sells a normal version not just the big 48″ that I love. Its so nice never needing an extension or having to bend way over to drill through real thick ice. I can see where a shorter guy might not like the longer version.

If a Nils owner says the Solo is a nice auger I’d take his word for it!

Spoke too soon. The next morning my starter cord was all the way out and would not recoil after the first 4 pulls of the morning. It was cold and I had not performed the suggested removal of the grease in the recoil with a bath of WD 40. I had decided it doesn’t get that cold in Iowa and I didn’t need to do it.

Still will not recoil after warming to room temp and getting that WD 40 bath times 4. Will call Stikemaster Monday but will likely be without an auger for a few weeks as they likely will want me to send the recoil head in and fix it. Turns out am not getting off to a great start with my Solo after all?

OK. Pity party over. Called SM this morning and they are shipping a new recoil this week. I thought it would be a long term deal because they have to be swamped over this Solo recoil deal? They even want my old one so they can repair it and get it back to me for a backup. Thank you Mike @ Strikemaster!
