I meant to add this on to an earlier post – may have been asked before…

What is the coldest temp (without windchill) that you have gone out onto the ice with a portable. It would be interesting to see who in IDO is daring – or just plain crazy.

    Mine:
-23 degrees. I thought the shack would crack and shred on the spot.

This is one of the coldest I can remember for sometime now. When propane freezes in the bottle, it’s cold outside

-37 degrees below zero last winter up in Ontario. Not a breath of wind. Everything broke. Snowmobiles, trailers, fishing rods.

This is how the day started. I go outside with Cal to start sleds. I go to open the hood on my 600 and the composite hinge at the front of the sled explodes. Hood falls to the ground. Cal and I look at each other and shrug shoulders.

And that’s pretty much how the entire day went. Touch something. Break something. Good times.

-53 on the coldest day ever recorded in MN. We hit Winnie for perch.

Have hit the -40 and below mark several times in Ont when chasing lakers. The really, really cold days are not bad if the wind isn’t blowing……

-38 on LOTW, we drove out of Adrian’s 13 miles and on the way back in a crack had opened up forming a 12″ deep pool on the road. Bob hit the water doing about 25 and his entire truck including the windshield was instantly covered in a solid 1/2″ – 3/4″ of ice. That was the day with the 30MPH wind.

The next morning we woke up down in Blackduck to the trucks reading -42 on the mirror, the Ford didn’t start, the Chevy did, after getting Bobby running again we called it and just drove home.

I ran a heater/cooker and 2 Buddys in the portable the whole weekend, fished in a t-shirt.

Now you know why I was late getting to the splake …I have a friendly reminder on my topper from that morning as well…the little plastic flap on the outside of the topper turns very brittle in those temps..

-28 below on the big pond we went out of the wharf. good thing we brought a genarator to plug the trucks in. we caught some perch and watch the walleyes swim by the camera. we did try the hot water test. put warm water in 5 gal pail and throw it up in the air and watch it crystalize pretty neat to see.

climbed out of the tent in BWCA at -40 to walk 200 yds to the fishhouse only to find that my buddy took the heater to his tent (to warm his skirt) walked back the 200 yds to get the heater out of his tent and walked back to the fishhouse only to find the propane for the heater frozen but we did put the down on the walleyes on that trip

-32 Grand Rapids. Highlight was holes were being done by hand. 30+ inches of ice. Would warm me up when I started drilling. as long as I have my shack and a heater I’m not sure there is a temp I wouldn’t at least give it a shot in.

-30 on ice, no portable. Girlfreind was with and we fished for 5 hours straight. She never complained a bit. Not even once. Think I’ll keep her.
