Clam Pop Up Ice Houses?

Hope everyone had a great Christmas!

I currently have a Voyageur and like it a lot…when there’s just 2-3 people. That said, I’d really like to get a second house for those trips when all three kids would like to go along. The Clam Command Post (6′ x 12′) looks like it would solve that problem.

Any opinions regarding the functionality and durablity of the Clam pop ups (regardless of size)? The one concern that comes to mind is durability of the supports/resistance to collapsing in windy conditions?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Jim

The guys from Clam were showing how to put it up and take it down at the ice show, I couldn’t get over how easy it looked.

a friend of mine has the command post, or the smaller one (6×6).. here are a few things i noticed:

-you really have to bank up the sides well, a little drift on that thing freezes everyone out.
-i didnt like the fact that you didnt have anywhere to store gear, if it couldnt sit on the ice, you were screwed.
-quad chairs are the easiest things to pack, but once you got 3 of them in that 6×6, free space became a premium.
-you have to plan for packing all your gear separately, there is zero storage with this setup.
-my buddy never figured out a good system for laying out holes… around the outside and everyone sits in the middle, around the inside and everyone sits against the wall, wheres the heater go, the lantern, the flashers, the bait…

its a good concept for those that cant carry a clam style shack, but i’d like something that has a sled or floor or something incase you have stuff you dont want to soak up water sitting on the ice.

have you looked at the dual side sleds like the x4?

I have one. It is awesome for carrying into tough places ( 26lbs ) I like the way it sets up , we just use our buckets and drill our holes in front of us. Wind is a problem , but the new ones have larger flaps with eye holes to put your anchors in. It does not take the place of a flip over , but does a great job for what it is. The newest ones have the heaviest poles on the market and that is a plus for staying up in wind. We have an Otter Sled that we pull out with the shack and all of our stuff in it. Just my 2 cents .

At first, I thought about the storage aspect too, but then figured it probably wasn’t too different packing everything into my Otter verses the Voyageur (for when it’s just 2 or 3 of us).

For my situation, I can definitely see where I’d run out of space with the Summit and figured the extra 4 feet for the Command Post would be huge. Hunter…I had looked at the X4 flip overs, but thought the pop up (as a supplement to my Voyageur) would give me more flexibility, depending on the size of the crew for a particular outing. I also thought it might be easier for me to move around in the Command Post than an X4 to help with fish, tangles, etc., as it can get pretty darn busy with three little ones

I’ll definitely have to make some adjustments for equipment too, but figure it’s worth it to have three smiling faces and hoping fuel the passion for my future fishing buddies

    Thanks for the input guys!

Keep us posted LF. I was considering a 6×8 for the same purpose(kids). However, the command post sure looks intriguing.
