    From thread >>> Rod Case

Frank, here’s those pics. As you can see I’ve got 6 rods stored in the case and I’ve basically settled on this arrangement after some experimentation.

I set my rods up in two group of three rods. Three rods at the top with the reels to the right. The rods at the bottom with the reels to the left.

I have the longest rods (Thorne Bros 36″ Walleye Sweethearts) further to the outside with the other two shorter rods nestled inside.

The scenario is repeated with the bottom three rods… longest to the outside. Shorter rods nestled inside.

    All reel handles face “up”.

I can get more rods and reels in this case by going with other arrangements but by going this route I don’t have to move one rod to get to another and that was important to me to keep things simple out on the ice when I’m wearing gloves, etc. No rod lays over the top of another and everything is just “grab and go” and I have room for 6 rods + 2 Rose Creek Polar Boxes.

The egg crate foam holds everything right where you put it and I would challenge American Airlines baggage handlers to hurt this thing without running it over with a 737.

Holler if you have any questions. The only thing I would change about this case is it would have a twin. But that I can fix.

NICE!! After my buddy snapped 2 rods a week ago with another rod holder we’ve been discussing how we DEFINATELY need something different. VERY NICE!!

I’m going to have to look these up.

Thanks James, WOW…that thing is sweet !! I can hardly wait to get mine and set it up. Your layout looks perfect to me, and grab ‘n go concept is certainly the one I want as well while on the ice. Thanks for taking time to post these pics….super nice setup.

James, I am currently using a hard arrow case and to get mine to fit I have to collapse the reels handel. Also the plactic is not the best sub 0 plastic and has some battle scars. I’m guessing otter uses the same plactic as the slead and is somewhat thick to? Also do you have to collapse the handels? Thanks -Mark

Mark, Otter is using the same plastic as the tubs. I don’t have any worries about it holding up in the cold or otherwise. As for the handles… in the pics I have them all folded but you don’t need to as there’s plenty of “head room” to leave handles on smaller reels like Shimano Sedona 500’s and 750’s open. Larger reels… I would think you would need to fold the handles but I don’t typically use reel that large for ice fishing.

    Great looking setup there James.

After trying a few different things this is my next inexpensive rod case.

This box measures: 6.3″ H x 33.9″ W x 12″D, it should fit nicely in my shack and have room for lots of other stuff. I’m going to make hangers so the rods hang from above having 3 going one way and 3 going the other way.

I’ve tried the Clam Chair, Rod bags, buckets, and now this is the last straw before getting an Otter Case. I’ll post up when I get it all done, the box is special order and should be delivered this week.

There is a gue on craigs list selling some nice wood rod cases. He’s from Golden Valley. They look pretty nice. Nothing too fancy but get the job done and hold your jig boxes too.
