Does anybody make a good, hard sided, reasonable priced ice rod case? I like the Otter one, but $75?

I know it 75 bones, but when you look at what you can put in it and never have to worry about your equip its worth giving it a decent thought. I have 7 combos and a jig box all secured in mine. To do that with other bags you’d need atleast 2 bags and then you still don’t have the durability of the otter case. It is worth considering
December 24, 2009 at 7:59 pm #826444I’ve been struggling with this also…
Last year I picked up one of the JR’s at Lundeens when on sale. It has worked well as I know have a Monster Box, so the rods are not sliding around in the sled with other stuff and getting damaged.
The case holds four rods nicely and I could fit six if I wanted. I just need to buy rod slicks to make this as perfect as I’m going to get with a soft case.
December 24, 2009 at 9:07 pm #826457Gents, search the archery shops. I got a hard arrow case from cabelas a few years ago and it works great. I think it was made by Flambeau (sp) it cost about $35. I holds 6 rods but some you might have to collapse the reel handle for. Best luck, Mark

They are just about bullet proof, just think of the value of the rod and reels that it will hold for you. What is it worth to you to get to your fishing spot and back home with your geer in good condition.
I sure would like to see a picture of Matts rod case, I mean seven rod n reels plus a jig box. Lets see a pic Matt

Matt, you can fit 7 rods in those otter rod cases??
7? Holst had at least that many high-end combos in them last time we fished! Maybe more? Specs say it’s 40″X13″. Makes alot of sense, esp. when you’re investing in good equipment. Our fishing partner, who shall remain un-named, didn’t fare so well. 2 rods broken, including one of his favorites.
I’ve been lucky thus far with a mix of Stone Legacy and Marcum rod bags, but I’m pretty careful on how I pack them. Still, I’ve broken a rod or two on long snowmobile trips. When you’re looking at two broken rods, retailing as cheap as $30, and as much as $85 each, a $75 rod case doesn’t seem so bad. Esp. considering something like that won’t wear out. I don’t own one yet, but it’s on my Christmas list (fingers crossed).

I got one for Christmas a bit early… and the thing rocks. I’ll post pics tomorrow. I can easily get 6 – 8 combos in there plus extra spools and a small tackle box like a Rose Creek Box. And the thing is bullet proof. I bet you could run it over with a wheeler and not hurt the rods inside. I’ve had a good number of rod bags that all failed far too soon and I’m confident this new case will last many, many seasons.
December 25, 2009 at 5:11 am #826514I had a otter rod box last year, and I was sold on the first time I used it! How sold? I bought two more!!
They are worth their weight in gold, considering how much money in rods and reels I have packed in them..
This product has my highest recommendation.
flatlandfowlerPosts: 83December 25, 2009 at 8:16 am #826519That Otter case almost looks to be my problem solver… I have been using a beckman case for years ( black denier with a PVC tube ) and i have never broken a rod. However, this case holds 4 and i have broken the metal pulls on all the zippers over the last 9 yrs. It was great when i had 4 ‘joe blow’ rods, but now with 9 assorted rods including some fine Thorne Brothers items, i want to upgrade. Does the egg shell padding work well holding some of the Thorne Bros’ noodles or quiver sticks?? Or should one be finding a flat faced foam padding?? Being a grad student money is strapped, but not enough to cheap out of a good case……

The egg shell foam held everything I put it in, even when we made 10 mile runs across URL with the Otters banging across rough ice. When I opened it up everything was right where I placed before I closed the case.
Fishin GuruPosts: 78December 25, 2009 at 10:36 pm #826590Picked up an Otter case at the ice show and couldn’t be happier, its a small price to pay for a big piece of mind knowing that your $100 Thorne Bros rods aren’t gonna break getting from point A to point B. I’d of rather just bought one now instead of a couple months from now after I broke a couple high end rods.
How are you guy’s getting so many rods in yours? Do you collapse the handles? I have been on all of mine it just seems they fit better, I haven’t tried to fit more then 4 rods yet but that might change when I hit LOTW and Rainy.

I’m collapsing the handles. I’ll post a pic later tonight of how I have it organized.
December 25, 2009 at 10:44 pm #826596Seeing as I missed the ice show I now need to get at least 1 or 2 of these cases. Nobody down here in Rochester sells them so I need a vendor…any pointers please?

Hey Frank,
Merry Christmas. I checked out the Otter dealer list and two are listed for Rochester. Fleetfarm and Gander.
December 26, 2009 at 12:06 am #826618I have mainly stradic 1000’s on my ice rods, and the really neat feature about this reel, is collapsing the handle is so easy. You basically back reel and hold the spool, and the reel handle unscrews. I also have a fly reel rod, and I am trying out the newere 500 series shimanos. The stradics and the fly reel pack in the otter rod box the easiest.
December 26, 2009 at 12:15 am #826620For those who don’t mind shopping on line this seems like a pretty good deal. Otter Rod Case

muskybonesPosts: 372December 26, 2009 at 12:41 am #826625I too have been looking for a hard sided rod case. I had an arrow case that I could fit 5 combos in, but had to fold the handles down. Pain in the butt. So I searched for a THICKER case so I didn’t have to fold the handles. Found it. It is a Beretta gun case. 36″ X 14″ X 6″ DEEP. In the pictures I have 8 combos in there. Reels are Abu 300u’s. The case is waterproof, hard as a rock, airline approved, rollerblade wheels (if you need them). It is not cheap. Lists at $249.00, but I found it on a big online auction site for $99.00 with free shipping. I am set.

December 26, 2009 at 1:22 am #826639Thanks James..I’ll check them out tomorrow. Last time I was there Gander told me this market can’t support a case thaqt expensive but they said other Gander Stores had them. FFarm told me they never heard of them..but you know me and persistence…I’ll have a few conversations with the Roch team. This just looks like, and now with you guys agreeing after using it, to be a super deluxe case worthy of the price. Thank you
December 26, 2009 at 2:29 am #826653If that doesn’t work I think you can order direct from Otter. Maybe just give them a call on monday and see if you can get one sent out.
“This market can’t afford a case that expensive?” I don’t understand that. Is it a premium quality product with a top-end price? Maybe? But that can be said about an Otter ice house too. But you see those everywhere.
I’m sure you’ll be able to find one, just might take some looking.

Indeed I can IF I really wanted to, I could get 2 more in there. But that would be really cozy. The Otter rod box just happens to be one of those products that I feel very strongly about, and one I can give my blessing to others knowing they’ll be just as happy with it. Its bullet proof and gets the job done.
December 26, 2009 at 8:25 pm #826768I just came back from FF and Gander in Rochester, no luck either place So…to the phone I go and am ordering one right now. James, did you get to post a pic of how you nest your rods in the case?

Way cool! $64 is the regular price. $58 if you’re club member. I have no idea what it takes to be a club member but these are the lowest prices I’ve seen.

I think to be a club member you pay a annual fee much like a sams club. I have been to the SSP store and you can do an order and save the shipping cost.
December 28, 2009 at 2:42 am #827075I have a Stone Legacy Revolution that I have had for about 5 years now and love it. Still the best in my opinion! http://www.stonelegacy.com/09-10%20Product%20Brochure.pdf
