Well I apologize for a late report but I have been busy the last 2 days, and Sunday night I was cleaning fish!
Sunday morning started out bright and early as we walked on the ice by 6:00 AM. The fish with a big target on its back this week was the slab crappie. With a few marks moving through early and a couple lookers, we imagined a hot bite once the light creeped into the area. We were not entirely wrong, as the fish went from sluggish to agressive once the sun came up, but the problem was the size at first. We caught a couple keeper 10″ers pretty early and then it was all 8″ fish for the next half hour. A move was made to deeper water where there is a little more water movement and more baitfish present. It didn’t take long to realize where the true “slab” crappies were holding. Although there weren’t many caught and the bite shut down around 10 AM, Some of the fish we caught were brutes and absolutely thick with whatever forage (guessing shad) they were eating. Another bonus was the wide array of species in the area. On this day I personally caught crappie, bluegill, white bass, and mooneye. The rest of the group also added a nice perch and a sauger to the list. Overall it was a fun day. We found our best fishing in about 25 feet of water using a swedish pimple tipped with a waxie. The biggest fish I caught, including a 13-1/4″ toad were busting butt through the 14 foot range. If you happened to present your bait in front of these fish, they were quick to inhale it after a slow 1 foot raise of the bait. At the end of the day, our group had iced 18 eater crappies and a lot of smaller fish. I personally had 7 good ones including a 12, a few 11’s and a 13-1/4″ slab. Justin also had 2 over 12″ and a nice 11″ perch to boot. Although I can’t say it was a great day on the ice, we had fun and were not totally dissatisfied with our outting. After a nice meal and a swing by the bait shop, we headed over to the dam to try our hand at some eye’s and saugers. While many people set up along the wall in depths of 10-15 ft right away and opted to wait for the fish to come to them, we jumped right on the fish from the beginning. A zig zag of holes was punched in the ice covering the break from 18-22 feet, which seems to be key in the later afternoon. After about 15 minutes it was fish on for our group and since we don’t like to fish indoors at the dam, we had followers after a couple of fish catches I had 3 individuals march right into the zig zag that I drilled and was using and start fishing. None of them proceeded to catch fish but it was still aggravating to say the least. When you set up a system you like to use it the way it was intended. The system I had was smooth and when you have 3 people occupying 3 of the 10 holes you drilled, it complicates things. I’ll get off my soap box now …The key was a number 3 blue/silver jigging rap on a long rod. I learned a long time ago that I am better without my flasher when rappin’ for eyes.. I managed to catch 6 fish with 2 of them being legit eaters. If I would have been following the 7″ size standard of some others I may have just had a limit Justin also iced a nice 17″ eye and Carson also had 2 keepers, With Kyle icing a few fish as well. The only negative of the dam excursion was the ice condition. The ice was very nice and thick, about 8″ of clear hard ice, but the problem was that the water is coming up. The rise of the water created a surge effect that perpendicularly cracked the ice into several slices of ice. As the night progressed, we could feel the ice literally waving up and down. Sheets were breaking off and floating away into the open water. Overall it was not a good situation. I wouldn’t say we were idiots for being out there, especially since we made sure we were several sheets back from being the one to break into the open water, but some people were actually fishing 3 feet from the open water just waiting to float out to sea…
Anyway, here are some pictures. I did not take any pictures at the dam.
