Reel weeds

I bought some reel weeds last week on ebay. The only problem is that I only bought the foliage, I did not get the weight, the float, the line or the spool with my purchase. So I have some questions. How much weight do I need? What kind of line and what size? I think I read somewhere that they usually have 40′. How do you deploy them? I mean do you usually stay in water that is 15′ or more shallow.

Any help you can send my way will be greatly appreciated.

as far as weight goes, I use a 3 or 4 ounce sinker to get the weeds down as they take a little while to get down when you hit the deep stuff. As far as a float , I use a large northern bobber -3 inch wide stuff to keep the line vertical. I would also take 40 feet only if you are fishing that deep at any time of the year . if you never go that deep less is fine. better safe than sorry though cause if you do and dont have it, your screwed.

If you just received the “foliage”, you didn’t get REAL Real Weeds.

Hopefully your material doesn’t crumble once wet and freezes.

Go to the FAQ section of http://www.reelweeds.com you’ll find all of your answers there.

I’m pretty sure the “real” Reel Weeds can’t be purchased that way but you never know what you’ll find on Ebay. Let us know how this product works for you once you get them out on the ice.

Hopefully you can get em fired up and working for you. I had just the reel weeds camera cable on last Sunday and I out fished the 2 shacks around me. We were set up about 30 yards away from each other on a big sand flat. It sure seemed to bring em in. Good luck.

Clip on structure is what I received. I am going to dip one in water and put it into the freezer to totally set my mind to ease.

Thanks I got some 3 and 4 ounce casting sinkers this morning at Bass Pro damn they were expensive. I would not have got them but their bank sinkers started out at 10 oz and $.40 per ounce. I was going to get some dacron line but it was 30 something dollars for 500 yards, thats OK I will try some braided nylon. I picked up some extention cord reels at walley world for a buck each. I think I am good to go. Thanks for the help

I didn’t catch that in the first post. No need to freeze it. That stuff is good to something like -30…as long as you don’t lay it on the ice WET…right *Nick*.

I’ve heard of a number of people that try to make Reel Weeds out of garland and it just crumbles when exposed to the cold air IF it held together in the water. But that’s how we get new products is by all the open minded thinkers out there.

Save some coin next time an buy some heavy duty washers or nuts at a fleet farm or harware store…no lead either to be in lake should they come loose.

When I first seen them in an ad a couple of years ago, just had to get one set but decided to get 2 instead. Use it primarily for Perch in some Lakes here in Ab. Sandy or muddy flats with little to no structure. Although takes abit of time to set out 10 strands, I set it up in a V-shape. Usually setup at the tip as it will act as a funnel.
Definately draws the Perch in and keeps them around longer. Downfall is sometimes Pike will utilize the Weeds as an ambush point….
Definately well worth my investment IMO

    Hey tchow,

No kidding about the pike. There’s times it seems like every pike in eyeshot ends up using your mock weed bed as a hide out. When you’re fishing pike this is a GREAT thing. When you want to catch a perch or two you need to fish out the pike first. Which in and of itself is not a bad thing. Just something a guy needs to be aware of and certainly a testament to how well the artificial structure works at times. If the bluegills stop biting, drop a camera under the ice and give it a spin. 9 times out of 10 Mr. Toothy is tucked in the weeds.

I thought about that this evening when I was out working in my shop, heck I could have bought stainless for that price.

I got them all rigged up tonight. I had enough braided nylon to put 45 feet on each spool. I’ll post some pictures tomorrow. I think they turned out pretty good.

I might have to head north if we don’t get some ice pretty soon.

If a guy put a couple tip up outside of the reel weeds would it be reasonable to assume that you might end up with a big knot? My beaver dams are the only ice gear I have that would handle gaters.

Yeah, that can be an issue. IF you’re going to fish tipups near Reel Weeds you’re going to need to be ‘Jonny on the Spot’ when those flags fly to keep the fish from running through your set. I’ve always done real well jigging around Reel Weeds. A larger slender spoon and a little tygerwire leader will get the job done.

You can actually contact Ladredge Outdoors and order the weights from them as well. Not to badly priced at all.

My neighbor made his own “reel weeds” by purchasing the plastic foliage used in an aquarium, tying them to some old 10 pound line, and putting a barrel weight at the bottom of the line. He said he has caught some nice sunnies using his homemade weeds.
