Is it still a no-no to take minnows off the ice?

    How many people do?

    Petey:

I could be wrong, but if you fish the same water again or do not put water into your bucket from the water you are fishing you can take your minnows off the ice. If you are taking your minnows to another body of water then you have to get rid of them.

I did not vote as I do both.

In WI you can take minnows off the after if you will be using them on the same body of water and have not added water from the lake. I do not know what the MN law says.

Unless somethings changed just latley, in MN a person may do what he wants…as long as they don’t get dumped into a lake. It’s more about transporting the water than anything.

I was a bit off in my above post. In WI a person can only use the fish on the same lake if you added water from that lake. You can still take the fish home in less than 2 gallons of water but if lake water was added you can only use them on the lake the water was added from.

Minnows and other Bait Fish Regulations

You may take live minnows purchased from a Wisconsin bait dealer (which includes Wisconsin registered fish farms) away from a waterbody if any of the following three conditions are met:

    • Anglers can take purchased minnows away from a lake or river and use them again on that same waterbody.

    • Anglers can also take purchased minnows away from a waterbody and use them elsewhere if no lake or river water or other fish were added to the bait container.

    • Anglers can also take purchased minnows away from a waterbody for use elsewhere if they intend to preserve them as dead bait using approved methods.

I think you can bring them offf the ice as long as you still have them in baitshop water.
