I just dug out my grandfathers ice fishing gear and Im getting ready to try the ice the saturday as a reliever to taking to finals on friday. I normally shore fish below the dams in the summer, so I know there is a nice deep scour hole in front of the dam below willow river. Is the ice safe in that area? if not, are there any areas anyone can suggest I try to walk out to from somewhere in hudson? I dont have vexilar type electronics, just two poles and a tip up, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Right now I would suggest you go with someone experienced on the river or not at all. I mean that respectfully.

x3, thats why I asked before i just went. thin ice and currents is all it takes to make the thaw out headlines.

Is it bass lake that is a little north of Hudson?? Been a while since I have fished up there. I know it has gills and pike in there. I believe crappies too. We only caught gills and pike the few times we boat fished it. Although…I should have hit it ice fishing…The gills were over 9″…

Might be a little safer option for you to get out.

The ice in that area is extremely dangerous due to the current from the dam. I may on occasion fish about 200-300 yards upstream from there but that is some sketchy ice, the hole you are thinking of stays open year ’round. Head over to Bayport and you will be able to access the ice there and shouldnt have to go more than 200 yards to find fish. Otherwise the North Hudson landing is an access that will put you rite on the ice, few people are fishing rite out from shore there but the best fishing is going to be a mile up form the landing.

As Suzuki stated you are best off going out on to the river with someone that knows or is experienced in this area. Good luck and be safe

If you are unfamiliar with an area, only go where other people have gone before you and bring a spud and use it often. Don’t go alone either. I personally wouldn’t sugest river fishing for a first trip unless you can follow someone elses footprints. The times I fish below dams are later in the winter after even more cold weather than what we have had and I do not go alone.

    Stay safe!

I figured my summer fishing spots wouldnt work in the winter, i just figured id ask. yea bass lake is where my buddy wants to go, talking about there got me thinking about ice fishing in the first place. is the north hudson landing on the other side of the willow river bridge? Im not going anywhere alone, last time i went swimming in the croix i almost drowned so i know the river is no joke. any knowledgeable people willing to take a bait and lunch bribe for some ice fishing?

Go on the thin ice, the local hospital where I work is looking to make year end budget. Seriously, listen to the gang here, and be safe please! Cold people are no fun to work on, they can’t talk and provide fun feedback, and usually do not do well outcome wise. Drunks are a blast, but do not mix the two. The Croix, any river for that matter, is nothing to mess with, hard or soft. Best advice is to find someone to go with you, or good advice prior to going from a reputable source, both of which you will find here. Good luck, stay warm and dry, and alive!

I know. i dont have my own auger so i have to go with someone knowledgeable regardless. I know how hypothermia works, horrible. Im not trying to run around naked in the snow to get my body temp back up.
