Just got a slightly used but slightly awesome trap II. I read thru the dnr regs and am uncertain if I have to license it. I will put my drivers license number on it, but do I have to get a shelter license for it as well? Do I need reflectors or anything else? Thanks for the help!

You’re good to go with your license number only
December 16, 2009 at 12:53 am #823667Shelters (fish houses, dark houses, and portables)
The following regulations apply to all shelters used on all Minnesota
waters, unless otherwise noted elsewhere in this booklet.
• All shelters placed on the ice of Minnesota waters must have either the
(
1) complete name and address, (2) driver’s license number, or (3) the
nine-digit Minnesota DNR number on the license of the owner plainly
and legibly displayed on the outside in letters, and figures at least 2 inches
in height.
• A shelter may not be left unattended between midnight and one hour prior
to sunrise unless the shelter is licensed.
Note: The Dept. of Public Safety – DVS now requires trailers used to haul
fish houses or dark houses and enclosed trailers or recreational trailers
used for fishing to be registered. See your local Deputy Registrar for
trailer registration.
• A shelter license is not required on border waters with WI, IA, ND, and SD.sounds like you only need a license if you intend to leave it out overnight unattended. Still needs ID visible though
December 16, 2009 at 1:09 am #823670That’s what I thought, but just wanted to make sure. Thanks guys.
December 16, 2009 at 1:19 am #823672Fishy ? ,, I thought they changed the rule for the PORTABLES ,only needing name or such if it was left unattended or using overnight ?
December 16, 2009 at 1:52 am #823674Do fishermen from out of state have to adhere to the same requirements?

I guess I need to read the booklet. Or stick to the border waters.December 16, 2009 at 3:54 am #823702

Just to clarify, its your DNR number not a DL number.

December 16, 2009 at 4:08 am #823705Regs say you can use drivers license number. Thats what I was trying to clarify, if I need a shelter license/permit whatever. Are shelter licenses required for portables?

There is no size requirement, and there is nothing saying that it has to be permanent.

I presume this would be the number that the DNR assigned to me when I purchased my fishing permit. Now if I am reading this correctly I could put a piece of 2″ masking tape on the side of my shelter and write any of the required information on the tape.
The main concern I have is that in Kansas I am not required to put any of this information on my shelter and I did not want to put markings all over it.Quote:

The only time you need to have a permit for your portable is if you leave it up over night un-attended.December 16, 2009 at 11:47 am #823743Quote:

A shleter license is also NOT required unless the shack is to be left unattended on the ice. Many people confuse the licenses with the label. For 95% of the population, a shelter licenses is not required. If you fish in MN with a portable, a LABEL is always required. Nothing to get upset about really, just grab a slab of cardboard, a sharpie, and make a sign with your DNR number that fits into the license sleeve on your portable. Takes about 15 minutes and you’re done.

A chunk of carboard and a permanent marker. Cut the cardboard to fit the license sleeve on your portable, write your DNR number on the cardboard, slide it in the sleeve and you’re good to go. About a 15 minute investment.

You’re confusing a shelter LICENSE, with a shelter LABEL. The label is always required…the license is only required in the instance you’re referring to.

The 2″ rule applies to ALL 3 methods of labeling. I’m not sure where the permanent part of it came from. I have 1 label for all of my shacks, I just move it around to whichever portable I may be using, so I definitely wouldn’t call that permanent.

You could, but since the letters need to be 2″ tall, you might want to use a wider piece of tape. Most portables have a clear plastic sleeve that allows you to make a label that you can slide in and out, only leaving it visible where required by law.

December 16, 2009 at 1:51 pm #823769I stand corrected! You can use a DL number. However, its a lot easier to use the DNR#. (Your DNR number is printed on your fishing license.) Its only 9 digits, compared to 13 on a MN DL. That and I really don’t want my DL number made public.

December 16, 2009 at 4:54 pm #823844I would assume that the DNR number would be safer too. I would prefer not to use my drivers license number if I don’t have too. Just paranoid about identity theft.

You need to have it labeled but you do not need a license tag. From page 61 of the regs:
• A shelter license is not required on border waters with WI, IA, ND, and SD.
