I just wanted to let you all know how the first use of my new Strikemaster Lazer Mag 2.5 HP 8″ auger went.

First off I used 89 Octane non ethanol gas and mixed it at roughly 40:1 with Amsoil Saber synthetic. The first attempt to start it I flooded it, when the instructions say if it fires at all take the choke off they mean it.

I primed it 6 pumps and on the third pull it fired just a little, I should of taken the choke off right then. I pulled twice more with it on, then decided to take it off and it started right up. Man that thing sounds sweet, like a chainsaw but not as loud.

I shut it off and tried to start it again, one pull purring like a kitten.

Now for the drilling, only had about 6 inches of good ice but it went through like butter and the motor never even made a change in sound or rpms. I let it sit for about an hour and fired it up again in two pulls.

I’m going to be really liking this auger especially when the ice gets thick!

Any mixture not 50:1 may lead to a void in your warranty just in case. If your running a synthetic oil run strikemaster branded oil. That synthetic is approved under warranty, I am not so sure the amsoil is…. Just a heads up…I ran mine this weekend too, 3hp beast, destroyed the ice, threw ice shavings really nice, I also noticed that I never had to use an ice scoop at all this weekend. The auger performed very well…I did notice that I used a little more gas that I would have thought while only drilling about 40-50 holes. Since it was the first use I am not so worried about that.

I emailed Strikemaster and they said any good synthetic was fine as long as it was not mixed any leaner than 50:1. I want to run a tank or so a little on the rich side to start with and then lean out to 50:1 with the amsoil saber.

I might have misread but do you have the tecumseh engine or the solo engine on your lazer mag. I have the tecumseh on mine and through communication with Strikemaster after a tune up I was informed switch to 42:1 back when they recommended the 24:1 mix.

2.5 HP Solo, this thing rocks. I want to see what it does next to my buddies Lazer Mag with the 2 HP Tecumseh. His cut well and I will need to wait until we gat at least 2 feet of ice for a good test.
