How will the recent snow effect the ice forming? I know this cold weather will help but how about the wind and snow?

How will the snow effect the ice?

if the snow is heavy enough…and it sinks down low enough to saturate the snow..then the cold will freeze the water soaked snow…
If the snow is light and fluffy…it will insulate the newly formed ice and the ice will not form very fast if at all…
December 9, 2009 at 3:14 pm #821888The snow doesn’t have to be heavy to get water soaked. The ice is thin and it’s cracking constantly. These cracks allow water to be wicked up into the snow. The snow is like a dry shirt if you touch it to water it’s going to soak it up.
As for the making of future ice, as Ecnook said it depends on the amount of snow. The more you have the slower the future ice will be made. Also note the more snow you have the slower the slushy areas will freeze up.
We only ended up getting 1-2″ of snow in the Alexandria area. Most of the lakes have around 4″ of ice and should be making ice as we speak. Thanks to the light snow up this way our lakes are in great shape.

December 9, 2009 at 5:33 pm #821937Light fluffy stuff here, when I finaly get dug out I’ll go check the lakes that were iced prior to this mess. Luckily my favorite lake hasn’t capped yet but will as soon as the wind dies.
December 9, 2009 at 6:21 pm #821963I think with the wind with it and behind it most of the snow should be sweep from the ice. I sure hope so anyway. If not we may have messed up ice for a lot of the season. that happened 2 or 3 years ago. I think it was late Jan. or even Feb before they were driving on the lakes that year

December 10, 2009 at 3:26 am #822163I checked out a spot today hoping that the snow was going to have blown off by the wind… not the case. I think there was only about 2 inches of snow on the ice, but it was definitely weighing it down. There was about an inch of slop and the slush was already frozen into a second layer on top. I was told guys were fishing this spot monday though, so I cant imagine it isnt safe just because there is some slush and junk on top… maybe?
December 10, 2009 at 3:57 am #822172It’ll be a tricky one this year. In some of the larger wind-blown areas that had good ice, you’ll see little to no effect. Check out the back-side of a point where the snow drifted and you’ll have soft-spots and slush.
At least when you get a good dumping on top of thin ice, folks know to be cautious. When you get this false sense of security, with chunks of poor ice, it’s a bad combination.
Be careful out there!!!
