I am planning on buying a new Power auger this season, I am looking at the new Solo. My question is that do you guys use to re-open holes? Do the cutting blades do the trick or do you need chipping blades? Thanks guys!

You do not need a chipper blade to re-open holes with a SM. I’ve never owned a Strikemaster with the chipper blade and I can open holes without any issues at all.

James is right… you do not ‘need’ one, but from the SM reps that I have talked to about this issue they have reccomended a chipper blade to reopen frozen over holes. I have struggled with this issue over the last couple seasons. I plan to have a 10″ chipper auger and an 8″ lazer auger and swap them between the Solo head.

I also use my Lazer to reopen holes in permanent houses. The biggest issue people have is the blade wants to bounce around in the hole and they can’t get the blade started. The way I get around this, is to tip the auger slightly to the side until the blade hooks up and starts cutting, then tip the auger upright and finish drilling out the hole. Works pretty slick for me! No chipper blade needed.

I would recommend a strike master 2000! It has a chipper and it cuts clean. It weighs in at 25lbs and always fires up 1 or 2 pulls. regardless of the techmesh 2.0 comments,it’s still the best.Best of all it does not lock up halfway into the hole.(Treat your ice gear good it’s your best friend in the winter)Well close to it!

    X 2

And yes, I have had both. I will not give of the speed and smoothness from blades versus the chipper

I have owned both and all i can say is that the blade is so much smoother then the chipper. I have never had any problem reopening old holes with it.
