I have a single place clamshell fish house that I want to tow with my snowmobile this winter. What kind of trailer hitch connection do you guys use on your sleds? My rear bumper bar is 1″ thick and I would prefer to not make anything permanantly attached to it.

I’ve seen these online, but they require drilling holes into the bumper, it would be nice if there was a similar design that just clamped over the bumper with bolts instead.

I have installed that very same hitch mount on an old snowmobile I had. It wasn’t a perfect fit as that is “universal” hitch mount, but it did the job. Pulling a single clam shouldn’t be an issue.

I have seen some guys take a heavy clamp and clamp that hitch to the sled’s bumper with a little tweeking. It all depends on the bumper design.

However, now I have OEM tow hitch’s installed on my current snowmobiles for pulling my Otter Lodge. That’s a lot of weight and pressure on the machine in deep snow and it’s best to mount everything correctly to avoid damage.

Thanks for the reply, I currently have a thick rope used for towing my icehouse by hand, I was thinking of just using a large caribiner clip between the rope and bumper. Like I said, I want something to use that isn’t permanant. As long as I go slow, it shouldn’t be an issue, anything is better than dragging that icehouse by hand accross the lake..

I wouldn’t rely on a rope to pull your sled, it pulls aright, it stops really bad, IMHO invest in the proper towing hitch for your shack, and you’ll have less issues and be able to move easier.

I made a Grand entrance or two Some may say I was going too fast (WFO), I maintain the sled didn’t slow down fast enough, I however was on a wheeler,(though a sled may be a little better is doesn’t over come everything) and it was UUUUUUUgly when the sled slammed into the back of the wheeler and got all wrapped up in it, now I have a real towbar, and I’d have to try pretty hard to mess up my shack, though I don’t doubt that it can’t be done.

One has to swallow a bit of pride while picking up the entire belongings of your ice shack after you tossed them in the air and all around… or So I’ve heard

    I used a heavy door hinge…
it was the restangle on one side then the triangle on the other. Im sure this type of hinge has a name but Im too lazy to look it up. But I did drill through.

A cheapy way is to thread your rope through a 4′-6′ piece of 2″ PVC pipe and loop the rope over your ball hitch or caribiner. It keeps the rope from getting tangled up in your ATV tire/axle or your track on a sled. It works but it’s not as nice as a real metal hitch.

I bought the same universal hitch for the son’s Ski Doo. I took it to the welding shop and they add more and redrilled the holes.
