What are the opinions on these side view units. Are they worth it or are they still do early in development to justify the expense?
    Thanks,

Worth every penny, side view on hummingbird has been around for a bit. Lowrance has the brand new system starting this fall/winter. Once you use it you will change the way you look for fishable waters guaranteed.

Without question, this technology comes with a price tag. As to the value of the price, it really depends on your application and how you intend to use it. If you want to take your fishing skills to a higher level, the value is very high. If you only fish visual structure, the value is low.

For the way I use it, it is as important as the boat itself. It enables you to examine structure in amazing detail and understand more about how fish relate to a given structure. It also gives a representation of the structure that is so much more superior to the common 2d image. I have ran the 1197 for over two years now. That one tool has contributed to my success of boating more fish than anything else I have used or learned – combined in that same time period. Keep in mind though, that my style of fishing is a very analytical approach.

If you spend some time on the IDO humbird page, we have a lot of images posted illustrating a lot of applications.
