I would stay away from the Nils hand auger and get a Lazer if I were you.
Once you get the trick down with the Nils Hand auger, it’s not so bad. The blades are very sharp! However, the problem lies in the design. Without a center bit to stabilize the head, all of my holes I cut were oblong at best, and the auger wasted too much time wobbling in the hole. My main concern is what would happen should I ding the blade or take a couple turns through sandy ice? With the Lazer, I can rely on any baitshop, just about anywhere to get replacement blades. With the Nils, I’ve got a buddy in Duluth that’ll sharpen them and do a great job, but you won’t have your auger for the weekend. The Lazer is also adjustable and breaks down if you need it to (storage, boundary waters trip, etc.).
I owned the 6″ for a time and wasn’t happy with it.
If you want a power auger but can’t afford it, this would be a great year to look on the used market for Lazer Mags with the Tecumseh engine. With the Solo coming out, there’ll be alot of guys upgrading and getting rid of their older augers. I think that’s something you’d be more satisfied with when drilling through thicker ice, esp. if you’re looking at an 8″ blade!
