After ice-fishing with me for several winters, and becoming tired of cutting holes by hand and sitting on a bucket, my father-in-law just went out and invested in an Otter shelter and a power auger. Now, I’m looking for a place where he and I can set and chase flags for a day to help baptise the new gear. Anybody know a good snake pit within an hour of Hayward, WI? Our family cabin is on Spider lake, and we have no northerns, only a gazillion little perch and 1 walleye per acre, so we’re ready for a change of pace. Thanks in advance!

Wow, Till I read the whole post I thought you wanted to put him in a snake pit to get him killed. Odd, because thats usualy mother-in-law. By the way, your picture looks a lot like my dog. LOL

Some people I know talk about the tip-up fishing for pike on White Ash. I have never been there myself. Not even 100% sure where it is, I assume it is farther from Hayward then you had wanted. Just thought I would throw it out there since you were looking for pike action. Can look into it for you, if you want. Another lake that has a lot of northerns in it is Menomin. Again, not real close to Hayward, but close to Eau Claire. The pike in Menomin are not real big, but lots of fish in the 18″ to 26″ range.

I’ll tell ya ….I have caught some very nice pike on Namakagon (sp) up by Cable Wi. I think that isn’t to far from Hayward…

I stayed at a resort there several times called Lake Woods Resort..

Been fishing the Minong Flowage for the past 5 years, its about 20 minutes from Hayward…. catch lots of northers, the bonus is it is a good walleye lake also. Lots of Northers directly across from the county park boat landing, on the east side there is a little bay and at the mouth of the bay is a big weed line that drops to 20 +/- feet. Great walleye and northern spot, especially in the spring. Should be good tipup fishing. The lake has lots of other goots spots on the north end.

Just talked with a guy who fished Spring Lake near hayward a couple weeks ago. I am not familiar with the lake. He said it is just a small lake somewhere near the Casino. Had great action, flags going off all day! Said the size was decent as well, many of them were over 25″ with the biggest going 37″.

I spent some time chasing flags in the Siren area on New Years. We fished Godfree (spelling?) Lake and caught a bunch of snakes all day. We set up tip ups between the public access and the point straight across the lake. Most of the fish were in 5-8 feet before it drops off into deep water. I heard there are some decent Bluegills and crappies in the lake too.
