Plowing on ice?

I bought a UTV for this winter with a plow. I want to plow out onto the ice for ice fishing. Not sure how I should set the plow when I do this. For those of you that plow out onto the ice, do you let the blade run on the skids, or do you raise the skids and let the blade run directly on the ice?

I would think a snowpacked trail would make for easier travel with a 4wheeler/UTV

I would think you would still want a little snow pack on the ice. When I’ve done it, I’ve left about an inch or two clearance and let the wheeler pack it down.

Once you plow you leave a windrow. Any little wind with lightsnow you have a firmly packed road, making it worse. You are definately better off just packing it down as long as you can. If you do plow it has to be extra wide to keep it open all winter.

I’d let it ride on the skids. If you let it ride directly on the ice I’m thinking you’ll catch every ice ridge on the lake with your blade if you let it sit directly on the ice as you plow.

Yep you will get better traction on the ice if you leave a little snow.

True that. Thus it helps if you angle your blade to throw the plowbank to the downwind side of the road.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I’ll go with the skids on.
