Lets say the average ice is 12 inch. Where would be the best location for the puck. I usely place it about midway so line and fish do not interfer with it. I know sometimes if the ice is thicker the unit will pick up part of the ice sheet. What are your thought’s.

I put it at the bottom or a little below and remove it when

    landing bigger fish.

Same as Dan, bottom of the ice and remove it if you get a large fish on…….half the fun is getting your line tangled in the ducer line and wondering if you can keep the fish on….LOL

    Lets put it this way…
A 12 degree transducer throws a cone that is roughly 2.5″ wide per foot of depth.
Also use that to figure out amount of area being covered at the bottom or anywhere in the water column.
Just a little extra info to put in the sack of knowledge.

I put the puck about even with the bottom of the hole. There are alot of times if I am fishing in water deeper than 10-13 feet i will drill a 2nd hole right next to where my current hole is for the Marcum puck. When i pull up a fish it doesnt get caught on my puck.

On a side note, I have heard of guys that have Marcums fishing with guys that have Vexilars and sometimes the marcums interfere with the vexilars. The IR function on the vex doesnt seem to clean up their signal. So the guys that have the marcums pull there puck up the hole some so that the ice knocks down some of the signal and it seems to help the vexilars. Has anyone else heard of this?

When I am setting up in the shack I drill a second hole tight to the hole I am fishing out of and place the bottom of the transducer even with the bottom of the ice.

If I am hole hoping a lot of the times my transducer will be any from the middle of the hole to a few inches above the bottom of the ice, I try to get away with using the least amount of cable but still being able to see my jig while bouncing around.

This is right out of the MarCum manual

Using the Ice Transducer – The weighted dual-beam transducer suspends in the ice hole from the ice arm. The self-aligning transducer hangs like a plumb bob and always transmits and receives a direct signal. The transducer should be positioned just below the water line, except when the ice begins to get thick (more than 24 inches). Once the ice gets thicker than 24 inches, ringing off the side of the ice hole can occur. This is usually displayed as a solid band of light between 2 and 3 feet on the display dial. If this occurs, lower the transducer to the bottom of the ice hole. This should eliminate most display clutter.

There really is no “best” location as it’s personal prefence. Generally, with a foot of ice you shouldn’t have an issue with “noise” clutter – just as Bret has quoted from the manual. I personally like it up as close to the top as it’s easier for hole hopping and getting out of the way as others have mentioned for fighting fish. However, if you want the cleanest view of your flasher, then yes, go at the same level or just below the ice with your ducer.

I would love to know more about Woody’s comment. The IR on the Vexilar does not block out the interference from a Marcum, and vice versa. Does keeping the transducer above the bottom of the hole really reduce the interference?

My vote is to keep it above the bottom of the hole or it will look like my FL-8 ducer. Something with teeth grabbed it on lake wissota last winter, several times actually. Has 7 or 8 teeth mark on the ducer and one tooth on the cable.
No more hanging it down 5 feet
