Not sure after the warm weekend. Ice was 6″ to 7″ on 26th. Fishing was slow in am when I was there. Had a few nice gills. Let me know on ice & on fish. I’m heading there on 31st
Thanks Rick for the feed back, for those views and did’nt know there is 7-8in” of ice seemed to be good in the area.I had the opportunity to take a good friend from England thats here for the Holidays fishing today. Just a note England in his area seldom gets ice of any kind so he was a little skeptical on what to expect. As we moved across the ice I explained the cracking was the ice expanding so not to worry. Setting him up with short rods was quit funny for someone use to fishing with the 12′ plus European poles as they say.The bite was slow at first but as the morning went on he caught on. We sorted through and kept 5 crappies 10 to 11.5in” 3 perch 11.5″ and 35 bluegills that ranged from 7.5 to 8.5in”. Needless to say he had a great time fishing our good waters. Hope my report helps and save some for seed.
Sounds like you guys had a great day. I’ve finally got some time off work and am done hunting, now the ice is pretty questionable down my way.
Rick(?) have you ever ice fished Backbone lake there? I know during the summer there’s a lot of small gills in there and a few pike. Heck, we even caught a decent rainbow trout out of it once.
Sounds like a great ice fishing day. Nothing better than a great day fishing with a good friend. My son & I are going Wed afternoon. I have a few days off, hope to get in alot of fishing. Thanks for the info. We will save you some fish for your next trip.
I fish Backbone alot. I live about 2 miles from the lake, in the little town of Dundee. I know what you mean by the small gills. Can’t find any nice size fish. Have caught some nice crappies. The lake does have a few nice bass also. Have been out on lake ice fishing 3 times so far. Kept 2 specs & 1 gill. I have talked to the DNR about the sizes of gills, they say there is to much current in the lake for microorganisms to live, to support the food chain for the gills. I’ll keep tring. A bad day fishin is better than a good days work. I know about the trout. I catch more trout in the lake than I can catch the stream in the park. (not a very good trout fisherman)
