Fishing from a boat or shore? Chinooks and steelies will be more active than lakers.

Hey John, I can’t answer your question about fishing that area, but as far as the Thorne 28″ Walleye Sweetheart, it might be on the lighter side depending on the sizes of fish you’ll be tangling with down there.

I’ve used a 28″ Walleye Sweetheart with the alconite “outside” guides in a Med-Heavy, and been VERY satisfied for most lake trout I tangle with in northern MN. These have been no larger than 10lbs for the most part. If you’re fighting fish that would push 15-20, I’d take the step up to some of their Laker-specific rods.

Those guys are true genius’s when it comes to rod-building, esp. in this type of application as it lets their ability to do some really neat customizations shine thru. I’ve seen some really tricked-out big-laker rods they tie up for guys that head to Canada every year. Impressive!

    John:

I did most of my laker fishing on Lake Superior, out of Ashland, WI when I was in college.

Since then, I’ve fished only a few times for lakers, most notably some of the lakes about 1/2-way down the Gunflint Trail, and Burntside near Ely, MN. There’s alot of options down the Gunflint. It’s a haul, but there’s no shortage of lakes with good laker populations!

I just looked at a map of the area that you are talking about. A person needs to be careful around the Gunflint Trail from what I can see on this map. Not many roads or towns in the area unless you stay close to Ely. Going to the Gunflint Trail would be an extreme adventure for me.

Those are the “populated” lake trout lakes. To get to the good stuff (BWCA), you need a dog-team or some snowshoes and a hand-auger.

    twister,
You aren’t going to get much information by simply looking at a map. The Gunflint is populated fairly well year round as it’s a popular destination for all kinds of activities (fishing, snowshoeing, skiing, snowmobiling, etc). I have spent a good chunk of my life residing along the north shore.

I can only imagine the fishing possibilities with a dog sled team in the winter. Lakers are all over the BWCA. Some lakes are even fishable via snowmobile where permitted.

There are tons of lakes in NW Ontario with excellent laker fishing. Just a short drive over the border and you can snowmobile in to different lakes/cabins and there are even some you can drive your truck out and go fishing. Just do a google seasrch on ice fishing lake trout in ontario and you will find lots of differnet options.
