It was a great day today. Ice was safe to walk just about anywhere on the lake. Sitting out there in the 5 degree morning and watching the sun come up was way overdue. It sure is good to be back on the hard water again. And I actually caught a few fish. They were hard to find and pretty finicky but still fun. Will be out in the morning to try it again, might even throw a few tip ups out for the heck of it.

Ever had one of those days when you just are sick of catching fish? I don’t either but today was one heck of a day. Whew, my hands are sore from handling so many gills. Early morning bite was very slow, I couldn’t hardly buy a fish. But, oh did that change. Around 10:00 things turned crazy. I moved to the shallows and downsized to a #16 Marmooska tipped with a waxie. The fish were just under the ice and hungary. After I caught about 50 fish, various sizes, I switched to a forage minnow. Figured since they were pretty aggresive I would throw something bigger and see how they react. It turns out the bigger fish, perch/gills/crappie, wanted a manly meal. I was fishing in 4 fow in a narrow channel between an island and the shore. I bet I easily connected on 200 fish and missed more than I can count. Kept 3 perch that were close to a pound each, and a dozen gills that were bigger than my hand and chunky. I wish I knew why or what changed the mood of the fish. The change from negative to aggresive was unbelievable.

Lake Onalaska is part of the Mississippi River. It’s report is quite valid here.
