Coming off Pelican lake tonight, my truck “broke” through. Not really sure what happened, but scared the crap out of me. I punched it and crawled out of whatever I fel into. The ice is pretty soft and about 24-28 inches. It scared me enough that I’ll be wheelering it the rest of the year. Probably wouldn’t have been so bad, but had a 4 & 2 year in the back seat with me.

I’m glad everything worked out for ya. Out on the croix today there was some idiot driving atleast 30-40mph. Everyone has to remember that this can be a dangerous time out on the ice.

I’m glad everyone is ok.. Bad enough when a car/truck goes through. But it would horrible if kids were involved.

    Kooty:

I am assuming that your Pelican Lake is further south than the one in Orr… Can you give me a location??? Glad to hear you’re all ok.

Glad you got out ! and ok . I live on Lake puckaway and the shorelines are getting bad and heard some trucks had to be pulled out in shallow water. Take care and be safe.

This was the Pelican Lake near Monticello, MN. I was using the access off the east side of the lake.

    Glad everyone is OK buddy.

I was out there this morning in the truck. It will be the last time my truck is on the ice this year. Lots of water on the ice and the sheet is getting very soft. Use caution

Thanks Kooty, I was just trying to calibrate the latitude line as I hope to sneak out a couple more times on a lat further north a couple more times in the larger vehicle.

Hey Kooty…glad to hear you and the family are okay. A trick I use…just to be safe…even in the middle of winter…is to always unbuckle my 3 & 5 year olds at the landing. They ride in front most of the time with me when on the ice. If anything happened, they are already unbuckled and ready to get “tossed out” as fast as you can say…pull. Never plan to ever endanger them in any way, but an event like yours would be just the exact reason I do it…unaware of a strange change in the ice.

I watched a guy drop his back end trying to cross the break yesterday. Some nice guy jerked him out with a chain just in time. He was sinking.

I agree Ted, everyone is unbuckled on the ice. I didn’t have them in the front seat, but they were within grabbing distance no doubt. The ice on the local lakes has really turned black in the last 48 hours.

Yep, I ALWAYS unbuckle the seat belt and roll windows down. I don’t care if its 100 below zero out, if I go in, I am getting out.
