With the waning ice season and warm days, I thought I would try to get out on the ice a few more times before it was all gone for the year. Soon my thoughts will be turning to open water and spring bass… ..
I went out this past weekend with my son to a small body of water and then out to a local pond near my home. Both days were productive and lots of fun for both of us. The first time out we set up and drilled our holes in about 15 foot of water… water was a bit stained which suprised me since we had not had any real warm days for over a week. The nights had been dipping into the teens and we had a refreeze going on.. Set up the shack with the help of my son…he had to hang on due to some wind.. .. everything was anchored up and to my suprise both of the ice holes were in the center of the shack instead of the perimeter… ..
Started out using a Custom Jigs and Spins willow spoon, chartruese, tipped with a wax worm. Dropped it down to within a foot of the bottom and got a bite right away. Reeled up and got to see a small crappie just before it came off the hook. Managed a few smaller blue gills off the bottom and when I’d mark a fish at about 6-8 foot of water, I’d real up and jig and hook a crappie. On one occassion I managed to hook into a really nice 12 incher that we kept.
My son and I fished for about three hours and landed several more blue gills and crappies.. The best of the blue gills we kept..the biggest blue gill of the day goes to my son…
For those of you that have read some of my posts you’ll remember that this is my first year on the ice…so I figured, “well there has to be another first for this trip”, and low and behold there was.. Here’s a double on one rod.. …One was a crappie and the other a gill..
The temps yesterday and today were in the 50’s so I’m not sure how much ice we’ll have left to fish, but I’m hoping for one more trip.. then it’s time to get the boat ready… open water fishing!!!!… thanks for reading all… TIGHT LINES!!!…
