The first-place winner of an ice-fishing contest in Somerset, Wis., has disqualified himself after contest officials investigated the circumstances of his win.

St. Croix County Sheriff Dennis Hillstead said his department is looking into whether the contestant, Lee Shehow, committed a crime. Attempts to contact Shehow were unsuccessful.

The Somerset Youth Athletics 2009 Bass Lake Ice Fishing Contest was held Saturday and featured a 2008 Dodge Dakota pickup valued at about $28,000 as the first place prize. It will now go to the second-place winner.

You must need quite the combination of HUGE BALLS and a SMALL BRAIN to attempt cheating in one of the big derbies!

I believe the story clearly implies the person was cheating. Why else would a person who won a contest forfiet the first place prize? I copied the complete aritcle from the Pioneer Press website. Pioneer Press

If you have questions about the story, send an e-mail the the reporter. Let us know what he said.

    Edit –

The printed version of the story said there would be a press conference today at 1pm. Stay tuned.

I want to know if the cheater was in anyway associated with the folks who were running the contest or if he simply cheated on his own. The article leaves a lot to be assumed.

You have no respect for yourself or other fishermen if you cheat in a contest!

Even if I were stupid enough to try and cheat at one of these tournies, my luck is I would still finish 1 place out of the money.

Here is a little more info from the New Richmond newspaper.

    Quote:

The winner of the Somerset Youth Athletic Association Ice Fishing Contest has disqualified himself and he may face criminal charges.

According to SYAA spokesman John Montpetit, Lee Shehow of New Richmond was the winner of Saturday’s tournament with a 2.42 pound northern pike.

After the tournament, suspicions were raised about Shehow’s fish. Several anonymous calls were made to tournament leaders. There were also undercover investigators working at the tournament who were questioning Shehow’s actions. An investigation was held and Shehow gave back the keys to the truck.

Saturday’s tournament began at noon. At approximately 2:30 p.m., Shehow brought his fish to the weighing station. The front of Shehow’s sweatshirt was soaked when he brought the fish to be weighed.

The $27,000 Dodge Dakota pickup truck that is the tournament grand prize now goes to the second place finisher. That would be Monica Slimmen of La Crosse, who caught a 1.72 pound northern pike.

A news conference is planned for Tuesday at 1 p.m. at General Sam’s in Somerset to announce more details on the fishing contest and the investigation of Shehow. Slimmen will also be presented the keys to her truck at that time.

Cheating is wrong, no matter who does it and I’m glad this is getting exposed.

Ya, but cheating can get you a 250 million dollar contract in baseball and it can get you to the #1 spot on the home run list.

Apparently, when asked what he was going to do with the truck, his response was:

“Drive it like I stole it.”

I watched the story last night. He did say he was going to drive it like he stole it. He admitted he has and arrest record. It turned out pretty cool, the girl that ended up winning had a really funny personality and made a joke about driving it like she stole it. One look at the guy and you could tell he cheated.

Actually, I was surprised the fella came on tv.

With that look alone, I’m sure he will be convicted of…something.

What’s sad is it looked like he had a kid with him at the prize acceptance. What a lesson for your son or nephew.

A two pound plus northern won the truck or should I say a 1.72 lb slimer took first place? I have must have caught thousands of hammer handles in my life, who knew one could be worth 28k.

Why would the guy need bottled water when he had a whole lake of it under his feet? Wet clothes happen to me all the time when I fish. A lot of times I get warm and take layers off and during the course of the day they end up wet. However I don’t put soaked clothes back on. So that’s weird.

Does anyone know what his explanation was for his wet clothes?

If he didn’t cheat giving up like he did was a little goofy, but in my experience everyone is a little goofy.

I hope they follow up with this until they know the truth. I am interested in seeing how this plays out.

Something smelled fishy at Saturday’s Somerset Youth Athletic Association Ice Fishing Contest at Bass Lake: the former winner’s sweatshirt.

Lee Shehow of New Richmond, crowned the winner of the contest Saturday, may face criminal charges after admitting to smuggling in the fish to win the contest, keeping it alive in his sweatshirt during the tournament.

Shehow, 38, won Saturday’s contest with a 2.42-pound northern pike. Suspicions were raised about Shehow’s fish, leading to an investigation, said SYAA spokesman John Montpetit.

Shehow later disqualified himself and gave up the keys to the contest’s grand prize, a $27,000 Dodge Dakota pickup truck.

The contest began at noon Saturday. At about 2:30 p.m. Shehow went to the weigh station with his pike.

Undercover investigators at the tournament questioned Shehow’s actions. Montpetit said a primary concern was that Shehow bought water at a pace that was inconsistent with what a normal person would drink on a 14-degree day.

Shehow’s sweatshirt also was soaked when he turned in his fish to the weigh station.

During the investigation Shehow admitted he hid the pike in his sweatshirt, keeping it alive and later registering it at the weigh station. Montpetit said he could not discuss where the fish came from, but said Shehow admitted to having aquariums in his house.

While no criminal charges have been filed, the case still is under investigation, Montpetit said.

The truck was given Tuesday afternoon to the second-place winner, 26-year-old Monica Slimmen of La Crosse, who caught a 1.72-pound northern pike.

Efforts to contact Shehow on Tuesday night were unsuccessful.
