Another Ice Fishing First…Big Creek Iowa

It was another picture perfect day here in Central Iowa and my ice fishing partner and I decided to make a day of it. We met out at Big Creek State Park, temps were in the mid to upper 20’s, sunny sky, and little to no breeze. Great day to be out on the ice.
I arrived long after Randy had been out there but he’d found a nice spot with some active fish.

I sat down and joined him for a few hours of fishing…not catching..
It was another first for me!!..I used a new ice rod that I recently won at an ice fishing derby…had two very nice bites on a silver spoon tipped with a wax worm. We were fishing in 16 foot of water. I sat watched my Vex and watched a fish come right up and hit my jig. Missed the first two, but managed to land the third on my new rod, a decent crappie. A bit later I started jigging my gill pill and hooked into another fish, however this time it was my first walleye through the ice…now it aint much fellas but hey…it is the first…

Randy did pretty good for himself that day and I added to the bucket.

All in all it was another great day of ice fishing. I’m going to head out tomorrow morning with my stepson and we’re going to hit a local pond for a few hours before I head off to work. I’ll post a report and let you all know how that went. I know this pond has some really nice bass in it, so maybe I’ll ice a bass for the first time too…

So are you going with a replica or a skin mount?

Looks like a tasty bucket from here!

Congrats on your first walleye. I used to live near Big Creek. This was back in 1997 and they had just drained the lake basically. I have always wondered how the comeback of the lake would work. Looks like it is doing great

Actually Scott, this year has been really frustrating on Big Creek when compared to last year. It was nothing to get 20-30 9-11″ crappies out of BC in an hour last year. This winter it takes the better part of a day, and it seems most days you end up with only two or three fish. They are really quality crappies though, nice and thick. We have seen indicators of more good things to come as a new year class of 6-7″ fish is starting to show up. I have yet to figure out the walleyes there though, guys at times get a lot of 9-12″ fish but really hard to get anything larger.
